Speed Goat Round

The same as you use for deer hunting.....270 win and up to 300 win mag.

In most cases your shots will be long range so you want something that is flat and can handle the winds over a distance.

Well i shoot a 7mm saum. I was concerned that it was to much gun do to the size of the game.

My pronghorn rifle is a 270 WSM, and any flat shooting rifle will work. 25-06, 270, anything like that will work as antelope are not hard to put down. Your 7mm SAUM would be a good pronghorn rifle even if it has a little more power than needed. Like Hornhunter said, antelope country is usually flat and wide open, and the shots tend to be long because antelope have great vision and can be hard to get close to.

Where will you be hunting next year?

My cousin lives in Acme Alberta. I go out every year at the start of whitetail season(and every so often when i'm lucky enough to get drawn for a mule deer) I have never gone Antelope hunting but I believe they go out near Empress or close to the Saskatchewan border.
My other cousin lives in Fort Mac so sometimes we meet halfway in Wandering river. I prefer to hunt down south in the rolling praries. All that bush around wandering river is to much like home. I like the change of scenery and hunting style.

Anything east of Drumheller will net you Antelope opportunities. I favored my .25-06 for antelope due to their flat trajectory, and the usual long ranges you will encounter.

In the past 7 yrs I have been on 13 Antelope buck kills, and like anything else, they can be very hard to put down, and can also go down with one shot. Becasue of the speed in which they can cover ground, even when wounded, a bit too much gun(if possible) is the way to go. Your 7SAUM will be great, go for the flattest ballistics as possible and a light jacketed bullet. One word of advice, they are always further than you think!
Just my $0.02

just noticed you shoot a 7saum. what a great cartridge, I enjoyed the one I owned for a couple years. Id go with 140 gr Accubonds or 140 gr Ballistic Tips if you handload

My last couple of antelope have been taken with a T/C Renegade sidelock in .54 cal. 25-06 and 270's etc are nice but don't count out guns like 30-06 , .308 etc.

i crushed my antelope with a 245gr barnes from a 50cal knight. with a little skill and some luck you can get close to them. they are fun to hunt and taste good too.

LOL if he's got you convinced that Wandering river is half way between Acme and Fort Mac he's been messing with the map :p

My Bride used a custom jobby in 6mm for hers. One shot and she dumped it. Not bad for her first big game animal! I used an old 30-06 just because it was a family heirloom that shoots very well.
I think your 7mm will work fine. It's just the practice, practice, practice...
Are you going for trophy or non-trophy?

Noel

Just to be different, why not a .257 Wby, or a .257 STW? It would be quite simple and relatively affordable to rebarrel a .300 Wby Vanguard to the latter.

+1 vote for the .257 Weatherby. Used it on a successful antelope hunt this fall, and definitely benefited from the laser-like trajectory. It certainly simplifies things when shooting something on the other side of 300 yards.
