Speer grand slam bullets?

speer grand slams are their premium bullet or used to be - the best advice I can give you is to go to the speer website and get the dope directly from the website- I've used their hot-cors as I couldnt' afford the grandslams for years- but I use 180 grain as a do everything bullet

Speer Grand Slam bullets are as good as most other premium bullets. They are plenty accurate enough for most hunting needs out to and beyond 400m in rifles that shoot them well. I have used them in the 30-06 for years, including a box of fifty that I bought in 2014. They expand reliably at the velocities produced in a 30-06 to at least 400m. The bear I shot in 2014 was taken at just over 360m by my range finder. The bullet did everything it was supposed to do with very little weight loss. It was the 165 grain bullet and would shoot at least into 1moa out past 300m on the range. The bullet went through a shoulder on appx 45 degree angle and took out the top of the left lung, one rib and lodged in the skin on the left side. My data book says the bullet weighed 134.3 grains and it expanded to 12+mm. The bear went about 20m before coming to a rest and was long expired before I walked out to him. Good bear almost exactly 6 feet tip of tail to tip of nose and well over 200 pounds. Way to fat as it was a fall bear that had been eating corn all summer and fall. I probably threw away 50 pounds of lard.

It was loaded to 2800 fps out of a 26 in factory CZ barrel.

Used 160gr GS out of my 7mm for awhile nothing but good things to say about them killed a 45 inch bull moose in 2011 shot was 200 meters quartering away tucked the bullet in behind the 4th rib bull dropped in his tracks did manage to get his feet under him went 30 yrds and was done .. have now switched to deepcurls no reports on game yet may have to go back to GS as i hear they arnt producing the deeps anymore

If I was savvy enough I would post pics of several 180 30 cal. grain Grand Slams recovered from moose and one from a caribou. Expansion was just as depicted in the Speer photos. Only recovered slugs that look more pleasing to the eye are the Barnes TSX line. If I was loading for a 308 Win I think I would lean more in the 165 grain direction.

The Grand Slams are not a bad bullet, but if you chase them hard, they turn inside out just like any other C&C bullet.

I have the remains of 30 cal, 165 grain bullet in my possession....only a bit of the jacket found

Regards, Dave.

Eagleye, I agree with what you say when the GS bullets are pushed very fast from the big magnums but the OP asked about 30-06 velocities. He is developing some loads and I think, even though he didn't ask, that he is concerned with how they will perform at the velocities generated by standard dimension mid size cases.

I have found that GS bullets will even perform well at 308win velocities as long as the bullet weights are kept at or below 165gns.

If he is working with a 180 grain Grand Slam in a 30-06, he should be fine.
However, the bullet I made reference to was fired from a 30-06 (165 GS) but in all fairness, the load was a fast one (c. 3000 fps muzzle) and the moose was at 44 yards.

I still have some, and would not be afraid to use them at standard speeds. no Magnums though. Dave.

Thanks gents, I do plan on working up some 165's for this rifle ( vanguard s2 w/24" bl) and if it groups well, we'll see how it does on game. Gonna try the 150's in my 99f .308. I also have some other makes loaded up for the 06 to try on next range day. Got hornady interlocks and Barnes ttsx ready to go. Thanks to my, impulsive ways,I seem to have built quite a stash of .308 projectiles lol.
Btw, Dave, this rifle started out as one of the $399 flamers from wholesale and now wears the walnut stock you sold me. Thanks, it turned an ugly duckling into a swan.
