Spent primer used to lower shotshell load

I know some guys that drop a spent shotshell primer into the wad to reduce their load by 1/8 of an ounce.

I have weighed several spent shell primers on my Lyman powder scale, and they are indeed about 1/8 of an ounce.

My question is: Could that spent primer hurt my barrel?

I don't know why they won't just get the right wad for the reduced amount of shot. In the past, folks did this but used a felt wad in the bottom of the shotcup, sounds like a much better idea than a spent shotshell primer.

If this is possibly in reference to shooting clays at any normal shooting club, there is a generalized limitation of 7 1/2 as max shot size ( and 1 1/8oz max payload): a spent primer of ~1/8oz in the shot cup is something like 00 Buckshot ...... and a bad idea on all counts for the obvious downrange issues.
I'd consider that before being concerned about the barrel.
If the correct wad cannot be used, there are all types of inert, low density fillers that do not fly more than several feet .... a primer is not one of those.
