I've noticed in my reloading manulas that some recipies reccomend using magnum primers when using spherical powders. Why exactly is this done and when is it a good idea to use magnum primers with spherical powders?
Spherical powder is harder to ignite, so magnum primers are recomended. I use magnum primers with spherical powder even in my .222 although I'm not sure if it's necessary for a small case like that.
I usually only use the magnum primers in my cold weather loads. I generally am not loading anything bigger than a 300 magnum case though--might make a difference in the large capacity cases.
