Just picked up a Mosin-Nagant 91/30 from the local CT along with a crate of surplus corrosive ammo and took it out back with five rounds just to hear it go bang. I picked up the empty casings off the ground and I saw this on one of them:

The other four were fine... it was just this one. Thoughts?

I get some of those after reloading a few times. I've seen some norc like that also. My guess is , it's just a weak case. And I've had some of that cheap norc .556 , with pin holes around the bottom and cracks around the mouth, this was even before being fired.

If it was a brass case and you were reloading I'd tell you to check and or chuck the batch. Luckily these are steel cased surplus, so keep shooting maybe give the rounds a once over before loading the mag?

Check your head spacing.

I just threw that one out there.

Don't bother. if it was a head spacing issue, you'd see mushrooming at the base of the cartridge near the rim - which I can't see in those pics.

If all the other rounds you fired were fine, I would take a guess that it was a "Chinese Surplus Ammo is Like That" stance.

Fire five more rounds from that batch and check them. If you see it again, fire 5 from a different batch of ammo and check those. Might be a problem with the batch of ammo where you'll see the odd defective case.

Ok, thanks for the info guys. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a safety issue with my new rifle. I'll keep an eye on things and keep shooting.
