Can you join a handgun range and still get into the shooting sport ?

Sure. You just can't buy a handgun. You'd be limited to renting or borrowing a gun.

Sure you can. Most pistol clubs will have a handgun night. Befriend people and you'll have fun.

Starting off, I'd just show up with ammo, the old bulleyes shooters had no issues lending me their guns with their supervision. But I'm sure there are people still like that.

Downside is that you'll won't be able to own one. Which may discourage people.
