I am thinking of starting up a more sporter type match for our Online matches. It seems many people are intimidated shooting against $2000 customs, etc, as would I if I were shooting such a gun.

My idea is to start up a sporting style class. The rule would be preatty simple, use any gun that does not exceed $600 NEW without taxes or shipping. This would mean you could use a CZ 452, or a Ruger 10/22 with a few accessories, or another gun like that. To further reduced competion we could put a cap of say $4.00 on ammunition for a box of 50 which means you wouldn't be shoooting against people using Eley Tenex or Lapua Midas L but could still use farily good target ammo such as Eley practice or Lapua SC.

Shooting at 50 yards on the USBR target is VERY INDIMIDATIG. Trying to hit the .100 10 ring let alone the 8 or the 9 rings is very difficult with a sporting gun with a rounded forestock so I think an easier target would be better. Here is what I had in mind.

Instead of scoring it WORST EDGE like they do we could score it BEST edge meaning that if the bullet touches that big black ring that measures slightly over .5 it is a 10. If it touches that little dot it is a "10X"

What do you guys think?

Great idea but it could be sometimes difficult to determine the NEW value of the gun if it's an obsolete make that went for cheaper then $600 NEW a few decades ago. Especially if it has no modern day equivalent.

Yes that could be one problem.

Making a list of every firearm made that costs under $600 would most likely be hard but i could include some of the more obvious ones (any savage, marlin (exception: marlin 2000L), CZ 452, Ruger 10/22 (gun and mods under $600), any CIL (not anschutz 64's or 54's though).

I would have to do some more reaserach and see if guns like the browning t-bolts would be allowed in. I am unsure of their exact value.

I guess that let's out my CIL 180 and 310. What about a Brno #1, #2, and #5? Would they be under the same category as a CZ 452? What about my Winchester 69a?

K98 what I was thinking in regards to the CIL was any CIL with the anschutz name on it would be allowed. They seem to have the sporter type barrels and are not in the same league as the more modern anshutz 64.

The brno's would be hard. They are every bit as accurate as the CZ's maybe even slightly more accurate. What do you think?

I think the winchester 69a would be allright.

As far as I know the CIL 310 is equivelent to the Anshultz 1416, and it has the 64 action.

I think the Brno sporter's are indeed every bit as accurate as the CZ's but generally speaking probably not any more so. The Brno's do have a bit better "old world" workmanship though. I love the 2 stage trigger pull some of the #1's have!

But the CZ's are pretty nice guns too, and especially so with a trigger kit. :)

I have several 541 Remingtons, these went for $295.00-$439.00 retail when new. However, to buy one now can easily break that $500.00 mark. They all have sporter weight barrels and rounded forestocks. would they be allowed?

Is this sounding complicated already? What if we just used current weight restrictions and trigger weight requirements? That way most of the "does my gun qualify" questions will be taken care of. I do like the idea of using less expensive ammo though. Maybe that could even be similar to what they do on RF central and use one type of ammo which could change each month. Just to keep it exicting.

I am unsure of how to make this less complicated. Using weight would be a good idea; excpet for the fact that most people including my self do not have a way of measuring exact weight.

Here are the rules that are at RFC for the factory sporting class

1. Rifle Value: May not exceed the “NiB” (New in Box) BlueBook value of $500.00. A list of eligible rifles will be compiled. If you are not sure of the value of your rifle: Shoot it anyway. We will tell you if it meets the $500.00 rule.

2. Weight must not exceed 8.5 lbs with scope or iron sights attached.

3. Must have the original factory barrel, and stock. Butt stock may be cut back to fit a Lady or Junior shooter. Barrel must not be rechambered or cut back. Recrowning is allowed.

4. Free floating the barrel and glass/pillar bedding is allowed. Upward pressure on the barrel with shims/glass is allowed. Tuners at the muzzle or screw type tuners in the stock are not allowed. Any labor charge by a gunsmith will not be included in the $500.00 limit.

5. Triggers must be safe. Trigger tuning is allowed. Aftermarket triggers or parts are allowed if the cost of trigger/parts, when added to the blue book vaulue of the rifle, does not exceed $500.00. Any labor charge by a gunsmith will not be included in the $500.00 limit.

6. Scope sights will be limited to not more than 24 power. No limit on the cost of the scope, or iron sights. Diopter lenses are allowed in iron sights,

7. Rests: Elevation and windage adjustments on rests must not be moved after the first sighter shot. A bipod may be attached to the rifle. It will not be included in the 8.5 lb. weight limit.

8. Ammunition Value: 22 Long Rifle Rimfire ammunition must not exceed $6.00 per box of 50 or $60.00 per brick of 500, before transportation or taxes.

9. If a rifle fits the rules for more than one rifle class, you may enter the rifle in each of those classes. Before you start a target, you write the rifle class on the target and enter that score in that rifle class. Do not enter that score in more than one match. You may shoot a maximum four targets per month in each rifle class where the rifle fits the rules. Post your best score(s) in the correct match thread for the month.

10. Box Stock Rifles: The rifle must meet the ,22 Factory Sporter rules, and may not exceed the “NiB” (New in Box) BlueBook value of $500.00: No modifications to the rifle, the trigger, or the bedding. The rifle must be as it came out of the box from the factory. If you shoot a (BOX STOCK) rifle in this class: At the begining of the third line of your score entry: Type (BOX STOCK).

Maybe something similar.

I think we should probably try to keep it as simple as possible. Your right in the way that a cooey can't exactly shoot with a CZ but I think that a Savage would be able to shoot with one, the heavey barrel models anyway.

I will be short of internet connection for the next month but maybe we can get something going for September. I will give it some more thought and maybe put together some rules :)
