Looking for information on spotting scopes for prs / lr shooting. how much magnification is necessary? can to much magnification be counter productive? what is needed to see bullet trail out to 1000 meters if your spotting for someone? any other suggestion or advice would be welcome.

I gave up at 600 metres, and went the range camera route. I have never looked back, my telescope now is used up to 300m and beyond is the camera. With the software it is unbeatable.

I do not shoot prs or any other competitions however I use a Leupold mark4 14-40x60mm with ffp tmr reticle for spotting shots when banging steel out to 1000m. In my research before buying my spotter,I found the 14-40ish power was preferred for spotting bullet trace, trying to spot bullet holes on paper is a completely different game.

Leupold's 12-40×60 Mark4 (or Gold Ring series with reticle installed by Korth) would probably be the best bang for the buck.
I have a Hensoldt Spotter 45 with the H32 reticle. It's not inexpensive but I have never regreted buying it. The image quality is amazing. I debated getting the Spotter 60 (60x) but have found that most days the mirage doesnt allow you to utilize the additional magnification so I went with the 45.
