spotting scope question... (return my x-mas gift and upgrade or just keep it?)

but it dose sound good... and the price is right.... sorry guys but there is no way im spending $2000 on a spotting scope...

You are like the rest of us and want a great spotter for under a grand. It just isn't going to happen. The best way to stretch your dollars when buying optics its to buy used.

iN FORMAL TARGET SHOOTING THEY PUT A RED SPOTTER IN THE bullet hole, so you can see it at any distance with any optic.

It is also standard pactice to focus 100 yards in front of the shooter (target out of focus) so you can see the mirage clearly. Reading mirage is important to shooting bulls.

In 50 years of shooting, other than small bore at 100 ayrds, I have never wanted to see bullet holes on the target. All i wanted to see is the signal that I got a bull.

In target shooting you want to see your target, and a few targets on either side, so you cann see if there is a trend of up-wind or down-wind shots. The usul power setting to get proper field of view and mirage is around 20X.

What I consider important in a trget rifle spotting scope: A tripod well adapted to snuggling up to a prone shooter, placing the eyepiece in a place he can glance into without much head movement.

A smooth focus knob that can be adjusted without any risk of moving scope off target.

A 45 degree eyepiece is a MUST. I adjust scope so I am lookingf down and left, into the scope. Less neck strain.
