Spotting scope tripods, once upon a time

My never ending search for a good table top tripod continues. My Kowa 661 is happily united with a Ewing tripod for on the uneven ground use. But it's sharp corners are frustrating on a solid surface. Recently had the real need to mount the Kowa on a flat table top for a match.
My friend has an older Bushnell spotting scope, and he graciously loaned the seperate tripod to me for the weekend. It's great and very strudy, with all required adjustments and friction locks where one needs them. Looking at the new Leupold series compact spotting scopes, I notice thier "compact spotting scope kit" includes a small tripod. Looks suspiciously like the budget "Celestron" so common on Optics Panet dot com. I had one of these once. I hope rats are gnawing it too pieces as we speak.
I'm very disappointed Leupold has teamed up thier neat little scopes with a crappy tripod (IMO) that needs thier own proprietory adapter to work with thier compact spotting scope series.

Rant off
