Spotting Scope

You get what you pay for with spotting scopes. You will need to have perfect light conditions and no wind to see small caliber hole at 200 yards with cheap glass. A 50x eye piece will give you zero eye relief and with a little wind you will see a highly magnified blur.

Agreed. Also, resoultion is more important than magnification. Even the best scopes are limited by atmospheric conditions. You can often see better with a high powered rifle scope than with a spotting scope - the optics are superior.

Generally speaking a 40 power scope will let you see most bullet holes inside of 200 yards. There is a used Elite 60mm in the optics section thats an OK buy and decent quality for your needs. 50 and 60 power are usually only needed when trying to see holes in paper at 300 yards or more. The new Legend spotting scope from Bushnell may be more suited for your requirement, or perhaps the Discoverer.FS

Don't buy a Leupold Sequioa (Green Ring) thinking they may be Leupold-type quality. They suck. Spend some money and get the real deal.

I have a 22xWA on my Kowa TSN-1. All I need for shooting from 10m to 1000 yards. I had a 15-45X on a Bushnell spotting scope (daughter uses it now), I usually left it at 15X.

I am in the same boat .. I know that you get what you pay for with regards to optics, but I just don't want to go crazy with a spotter. Something middle of the road, armored to some extent and with decent glass. Anyone have a spotter from the Vortex line?? Your thoughts??

I've got an older bushnell sentry from the 80's with a fixed wide angle 22X eyepiece and I can't see .22lr at 100 yards.....I can just make out .30 holes if they are in the black.

The Kowa's must be an expensive scope to see bullet holes a kilometer away!

The new bushnell spacemaster's are supposed to be pretty good for around the $400.00 range and if it's range use only you can get a bigger opjective scope then something for packing on your back....

Please re-read my post. Nothing stated about seeing bullet holes at 1K.
In long range target shooting, a shot indicator is inserted in the shot hole by a person working in the butts. For long range shooting 800-1000 yards, the indicator is an orange disc 6" in dia. With no mirage I can still pick out the scoring rings at 1K. In heavy mirage the 22x is still good enough to challenge for a high value:D
At 10m I can read the fine print on an air rifle target.

I use a 20x Kowa compact for the same purpase as Maynard. Works just fine. Depending on light, atmosperic conditions, you can sometimes see the scoring rings all the way out. If you want to be able to see all calibres of bullet holes at all ranges, a digital wireless camera might be the way to go.

Gottcha,
How far can you see .22 cal holes with your Howa?

I can see .22 bullet holes at 100m no problems. I don't shoot .22 any farther then that. The .223 I will use at 300 yards but can't see bullet hole. I can only see .308 holes at 300 if there is no mirage and light behind the target.

I have a Konus scope 20-60x 80mm obj. 45 degree body It is a decent starter scope it is clear in the centre with slight aberrations around the edges still much clear then a 50 or 60mm scope. For the $200us price it is a solid scope.

P.S.
My girl was disappointed that i didn't acknowledge that she got it for me as a Christmas gift.

Trevor60,
I will have to agree with you on the Konus scopes. A fellow CGN picked one up in the US last summer. On first viewing is it every bit as clear as my Kowa. At about 1/4 of the price and about 1/3 of the weight it sure looks like a good deal. I may end up picking one up just to have a spare.
