Hello All!

Ok....right out of the shoot I'll concede that an M305 (especially the one I was using in the upcomming ancedote!) likely does not pass the muster in the precision rifle department, but I figured the folk here would be best suited to sharing experience with spotting scopes.

I was out shooting my M305 this past long weekend; primarily working on > 300 yards from kneeling and sitting. I had set up in a freshly cut hay field and was using my cheap-o leupold wind river spotting scope to spot hits after each 5 round "heat". By mid morning the wind was up a bit and some mild mirage was developing, sadly enough that I was then unable to see the .30 holes at 300 yards. So I moved my target to 200 yards and was very dissapointed to discover that I still could not see the .30 holes in the cardboard sheets I was using as a target. CR*PPY! My Swarovski 10x40 binos could kinda make them out and it got me thinking that perhaps with a better spotting scope I'd be able to practice in more heat/more wind.

So.....who here has experience with either the Leupold Gold Ring 12-40x60 HD or a Swarovski 20-60? In the Swarovski world, is it worth the extra grand to move up to HD? What would I need to be able to see .30 cal holes out to 500-600 in miragy kindof conditions?

Thanks for the voice of your experience....

Even the sworavski won't see 30 cal. holes in a black bull at 500.
Especially through thee mirage!
Paul Reibin at rangesports Unlimted has some smokin' deals on a few Kowas at the moment ( half the Sworvoski and WITH a stand!).
The Kowa is an excellant scope, BTW....

I have the Leupold Gold Ring 12-40x60 HD and it is a nice scope however you still see the mirage in the heat of the day. I don't know if any scope will help out with that.

ASs far as competitive target shooting goes, yopu want to be abble to read the mirage.

The trick is to figure out where you are actually reading it!
There have been whole books written about it, and it is still sometimes a mystry to all involved!:D

How about bullet holes in a brown piece of cardboard at 500 yards?
Yup, you should be able to see those!
Also, if you take a "shootnsee" target, and paste on the carboard, ypu's bbe good to go!
Give Paul a call (250) 372 7030.
He will be able to advise you expertly - he is a long range builder AND shooter!

I have a Kowa TSN-1, with sunlight behind the target I can see .30 cal holes at 300 yards. This scope is good enough to challenge for a higher value out to 1000 yards if there is no mirage. Once the mirage is up, forget it. I don't know of any spotting scope that can see through mirage.
