Spotting scopes?

It depends on how much you have to spend but personally I, and others, will advise you to buy the best quality you can afford. A sponsor of CGN is Camerland and they have some very excellents prices for Vortex spottting scopes and others.

Which they are no longer allowed to bring into canada...

typed on their forum today:
We were informed at SHOT that we are not allowed to export any Vortex items into Canada as it violates an agreement between Vortex USA and Vortex Canada. This includes and and all Vortex products.
It is our pleasure to reply to your questions pertaining to Vortex products and to advise you which of their products would best suit your needs, however, you will have to purchase from a Canadian Vortex dealer. We apologize for this, however, it is out of our control.

Thanks for the info. What is the average power range of a spotting scope for 100 yard/meter viewing of 22 cal holes? I know that the Bushnell Spacemaster with it's 15-45 X 50 just doesn't quite do it but is great for 25 yard indoor range.

It depends a great deal on the target material and the light conditions.
As an example, on a sunny day, and white paper, I can see 22 cal holes on my south-facing 200 yd. target board with a cheapo Bushnel 20x (I think) that hangs around my bench. Other conditions require a better scope....

I can easily see 6mm holes at 100 meters with my 6-24x42 Sightron Big Sky rifle scope, even if they are in color. In the black at any distance is hit and miss. I have seen 6mm holes in the white at 300 meter with the same scope. Have you thought about a higher powered scope for you gun instead of a spotting scope?

But from what you report you must be looking to see holes in the black??

With bench resting the .223 I can keep them all in the black if I do my part but it is the only rifle I have at the moment that has a scope, the rest are all open sights. When the weather warms up and I get a chance I will have to get back up to the outdoor range and give the Bushnell another try then.
Most of the targets I am using are white/cream with black centers, maybe I will try getting some shoot-n-see centers and see if that helps.
Thanks for the posts.

As stated in Doug's post, this is an agreement with Vortex USA and Vortex Canada who is the exclusive distributer of Vortex products in Canada. It makes sense to me that a dealer outside of this country should not be allowed to sell into this territory as Vortex Canada is spending mega bucks on advertising, Wild TV, various publications, and so on. It would also be unfair to the Canadian distributer if I bought Vortex product out of the country, then returned it to them for warranty, which has undoubtedly happened. I give kudos to Vortex USA for first of all designing and building some of the best optics in their respective price ranges, and for also protecting the Canadian retailer from foreign price choppers.

This post is no way meant to say anything bad about Doug at Camera Land as I heard nothing but good things about him and the type of service he offers. Also, there is another site sponsor who offers excellent customer service and sells Vortex products, check out One Shot Tactical.
