I'm thinking of getting my first spotting scope. I would use it for target shooting and scouting deer. What magnification would I need to see bullet holes at 300 yards, for doing a ladder test etc? What scopes are good? I'm considering a bushnell elite, since thats what I usually use for a rifle scope. Thanks

To see bullet holes at 300 yards you need very good optics (read expensive), and a rock solid tripod of some sort, perfect lighting conditions and no mirage.

My Kowa TSN 883 works well at 300 yards with good lighting, and under perfect conditions,I can make out bullet holes at 400 yards on the white and orange targets that many people use.

Kowa is where you should spend a lot of time looking. They make some of the best spotters on the market. Big difference between seeing bullet holes at 200 yards and 300 yards. Your bushnell will have to be top end to get you there.

Against an orange background and with patience can see bullet holes at 600 yards with a 60 power swarovski and I was good to about 400 yards with a 45 power leupold. Hope that is of some help

I think that you would be able to see your bullet holes at 300 yards with the bushnell. If you can look through one before you buy you could probably figure it out.

OK, so the $469 15-45x60 bushnell elite isn't likely to do what I want. I guess I'll just quad to the target after each shot. Thanks.

You have to try it to know. My guess is it will be real hard to see the holes at 300 with that spotter. I too would quad until I could buy a better optic.
