I have a Sprinfield 87A and have a question about it.

What purpose do the slots cut into the left side of the receiver serve?

The action on this rifle is the exact same as the action on my Savage 6A. The slots or "gills" you refer to may be there to vent gasses in the event of a barrel obstruction, preventing them from blowing back twords the shooter. Other than that they are a distintive feature on a decent rifle.
Cheers!!

It is a fun rifle to shoot.
The click clack sound it makes is neat.

Almost looks like it fires from an open bolt as the bolt stays back until you release the trigger.

I had one of these rifles and foolishly sold it (although I bought a sweet shotgun on a steal of a deal with the proceeds).

I very much like them and want another. You can shoot the nards off a gnat with them, and they will handle shorts, longs, long rifles, AND they can function as a bolt gun if your semi-auto isn't working so great. Easy to clean, too.

I have the Stevens model 87 which is the same. The vents are to even out the back pressure when the bolt is moved back by the cart firing. Been out shooting it and it handles the 100 yard shots like a pro. There were a couple 87s in the EEs lately.
