Hey there. I am going after black bears this spring and wanted to know if anybody out there could give me a few tips.. This is not my first time bear hunting (ok..ok..my second time), but my first Spring hunt. We are allowed to bait them and to take two bears. I will be using my .30-06 with 180 ammo. Just looking for some tips on hunting the spring. Certain areas bears will hold up or travel more in the spring time? I don't really have to time to be baiting for a week or so straight.. It will be more like a 2 day hunt (Each time) 3 or 4 times over the season. .. Will bears come around within a day if they smell goodies (if they are in the relative area)? Tips on shot placement..I would like to find em where I hit em..But i know it's not guranteed unless a solid head/neck or spine shot..what about a shot through the shoulders? That should break em down. Anyway all tips comments welcome.

Thanks

Use vanilla and marshmallows around your bait site, do a honey burn once in your stand, burn honey in a old pop can rot small dipper till it boils the smell will travel for miles, if you cant get to a bit site all the time, put fryer grease around it , the bears will track threw it spreading the grease wherever they travel and other bears will pick up on it,go to Mary Browns and ask for old grease or any restaurant, use a trail cam if you have one to see when the bears are hitting your bait, as far as shot placement, your using a 30-06 any where in the vitals, make sure the front shoulder is forward, like when the bear is reaching in the bait, my last one was 565 lbs, heart shot , he only ran 30 years and died!, what part of home will you be hunting in, Avalon or central or west, good luck and take a camera!

Thanks, some great ideas there!! I will be hunting area 28 (Black River) pretty much inbetween swift current and up to terra nova. I think i'm going to focus somewhere in the middle of swift current and clarenville...Any suggestions, or experience with this area??

Thanks,
Billy

If you cannot bait frequently, here are a few ideas (not from experience but from asking the same question a few years back)

Honey burn as mentioned above, you can also do a syrup burn or boil anything sweet really. I would use a huge pot on a small stove, a half a cup of honey or syrup will boil out of a huge coffee can! I would do this on a day with a mild wind (but definitely some wind)

Some have had success with predator calls as well.

Another thing you can try, if you can get out a week or two before, dump a HUGE pile of bait out, no meat, just breads, fryer oil, sugars etc... (donuts are your best bet) Breads soaked in grease and sugars are great too. When i say a huge pile, I mean at least a 45 Gallon drum, 2 might be better and somewhere birds are not likely to get at it, like in the woods.

A third thing... do you have beavers on the island? A skinned beaver carcass is apparently irresistable to bears, it usually brings them around in a day or two, tie this well to a tree or better yet hang it out of reach (bears can climb out on very small limbs) Seriously... who here wouldn't eat a beaver if they came across one spread out in the woods?
Some of my buddies will insist on putting a beaver on any new site.
