I have 2 SKS Chinese Type 56 and both have the free floating fp, has anybody installed a Spring loaded fp like the ones you can buy from the USA (Murrays Gunsmithing) in Texas? I worry a little bit about slamfires but i always keep my FP clean so that it rattles.... just curious what kind of experiences people have had with free floating pins and if anyone has had any trouble with them.
Thanks

Welcome to gunNutz Fender:D,Theres been a few threads asking the same question in the past month so the concensus is if you keep your pin clean your allright BUT if you use non corrosive then use the Murrays Spring and pin because the primers are softer.Do a search to see all opinions though.

I have had my SKS for a good while now and have gathered much info on this very subject. I have come to the conclusion that the SKS will function perfectly with the ammo it was designed for. Misurp FMJ com block ammo. Like the current surplus from the former czech republic.

If you insist on feeding a steady diet of american made remington, winchester etc. ammo to your sks then you should get the murray pin as the primer cup material is much thinner on these rounds and you may blow primers with the standard pin. Having said that, in my experience, the murray pin will not reliably ignite the military rounds as the spring reduces the impact of the firing pin. The wolf replacement hammer spring is another after market add on that will help reduce your trigger pull but caused misfires from light primer hits in my gun as well.

My advice to you? Shoot your SKS as it was made. Get yourself a big crate of surplus ammo (it's all corrosive) and clean after every trip to the range. You will enjoy trouble free shooting.

I've had my (Yugo) SKS for a few years now, have fed it a variety of ammo, both commercial and milsurp (I guess about 2K rounds by now), in all weather and various states of cleanliness. I have yet to experience a single incident of slam-firing, nor have I ever witnessed a single incident of an SKS slam-firing. Although I have been present and witnessed occasional slamfires in Garands and an AR.

I figure if it was to happen it would have happened by now.

Thanks for the advice guys, i like the idea of keeping my Rifles original so i will just stick to the cheap corrosive stuff and keep a bottle of Windex handy...:D

@ Woodeneye

How are you? we keep bumping into each other in forums...:D...we will have to get out for a target shoot someday preferably when it gets warmer....:)

Some of the 1950 and 51 rebuilds have spring pins, but the rest are floating. If your pin rattles freely when you shake the bolt, there is no problem at all. Just keep shooting it and cleaning the way that has been working for you.

You are looking for the one from Russian 1949 SKS

Yes my Russian Tula 1950 had a spring loaded firing pin (that is the one i am shooting in my avatar) but i ended up selling it because the inside barrel was as smooth as a shot gun just plain worn out so a friend of mine bought it and was going to repair it if possible.Funny after 1950 the Russians switched to the free floating pin for some reason.

Correct you want to buy one from 1949 or 1950 ( early production) 1949 that I have are non chrome lined. 1950 if refurbed could have chrome lined barrel. Depending what are you after.
