Am I correct in thinking this spring should not be in this hole but rather on the top as shown in the second photo?

May be hard to see but its in there...

I am thinking it should be dropped in here...

Assuming I am right, any ideas for delicately removing the spring from the wrong spot?

Thanks for the help / suggestions.

Nope, the spring is in the right place.
That's the inner band spring... a metal washer is between it and the wood to prevent the wood from being crushed when tightening the screw.

Fantastic! Thank you tatou - the sporterized rifle I inherited is reversed (ie spring was above when I broke it down) so I am relieved to hear that as I didn't want to start prying the spring out.

Glad to help. Those springs do tend to stick in some forends... but it should not be supper tight.
It's probably stuck in old grease and crud.
Normally if they dont fall out by themselves you can use a small pick, a small screwdriver or a nail and it should pop out.

It's not rare to find sporters assembled incorrectly... but it's the first time i have seen that spring installed from above lol

Tatou - this spring is stuck in the replacement wood I bought. It is definitely not "floating". I have picks so I think I can get it out.
