So here is the plan for Ontario spring turkey season 2015:

My buddy and I have a blind north of Hamilton to hunt turkey from. We are both getting a tag, but he will hunt first while I call for him in the blind. As per regulations, I won't be carrying a firearm while we are together.

However, the current regulations state:

You are permitted to call wild turkeys for another hunter after filling your own licence(s), but you must not be in possession of a firearm when doing so.

Does this mean I must fill my tag first before being able to call for him? In essence, that two hunters with unfilled tags cannot hunt and call together, even if only one if shooting? Is this to prevent them passing a gun back and forth and taking turns shooting or such?

Thanks in advance.

I read it as you may continue to call and help your partner hunt after filling your own tags. Typically if you have filled your tag, your done no more hunting

It means that if shoot a bird in the morning, you can stay with your buddy as a caller but you cannot have a firearm with you while doing so.

I read it as not being able to call for someone UNTIL you had filled your tag. Now I see what you mean, it's a reassurance that you can help someone else even after you are "done" getting your bird.

if you both have a tag then both can have a gun .lots of guys shot doubles ,if one of you fills a tag the one that used his tag may call turkeys for other hunters but MAY NOT CARRY A GUN AS HIS TAG HAS BEEN FILLED .so if you have a tag carry a gun ,no tag no gun ,CDutch

Call anyway. Shoot a bird that day and you can continue to call without your shotgun. Winter has been kind around here so turkey hunting should be great.

those stupid birds are pretty smart. last years winter was horrible, so i took to feeding them since im such a nice guy. I slowely dwindled down the feed and a week before hunting season opens i stop feeding them. Didnt see a single bird on my property until after the fall hunt closed..

You are fine to carry a gun, call and hunt with your buddy with a unfilled tag. YOU CANNOT PARTY HUNT TURKEYS. This means you cannot shoot a bird and have your buddy tag it and vice versa. Other than that You are setting yourself up for frustration if your buddy is not in the blind and you have no gun cause those birds will come straight in if Mr Murphy has his way and you have a tag in pocket.

I take guys out all the time and call for them as early in the season I like to inventory the birds and usually go after the bigger ones the last week of the season when they get cooperative. Unlike last year where the birds did not even start breeding til after the season closed. I saw more turkeys the first two weeks of June than I did all open season

To me, it says that you cannot have a gun with you AFTER you have filled your tag.

If you both have tags, then you can both call or shoot them.

Its only once your tag is filled that your quoted regulation matters. At this point, you can not have a gun on you, but you can still call for a friend.

so, you shoot yours, would tossing the gun it in a case be sufficient? so i could shoot mine? or do you have to walk out of the woods/field and put your gun in teh truck then come back?

Walk back to the truck I would think.

If its just sitting in a locked case beside you, a CO would argue you can get it out in a few seconds and be using it in no time flat.

The other way it works is if you both go out, but only one of you has a tag. Then only the person with a tag could have a gun, while the other calls for him.

My son and I always call for each other... we take turns until one has tagged out for the day, and then the successful hunter calls for the one who still has a tag, until he gets his bird... then we get a pizza and watch an old western.

I am going to chip in again and propose this scenario. Two guys hunting in close proximity, one shoots and tags a bird at daylight, unloads and cases the gun. Stays and calls for his buddy.

I say perfectly legal due to the gun being unloaded and cased and being in direct possession of said tagged bird and calling in close proximity to the second hunter and you would be able to show them the sight of the original kill. If not, you could be charged before or after shooting time with the very same cased and unloaded gun on the original reasoning that you could easily access said gun. That and this is Ontario where I have seen 1 co in 35 years of hunting

not to sure about that who says you can not shoot crows or yotes ,with your small game lic thy are open all year ,D

who says .you got any idea how many times I have had yotes come in to the turkey decoys .lots .I am just saying all the rules are not black and white ,and thy should be .to much is left up to a CO discretion .Dutch

If you have a license to hunt turkeys, you can call them for someone else before you have harvested your own.

And after!

C'mon guys, this is stupid simple. Anyone who has a tag can shoot and call. If you've filled your tag put the #%$@ firearm away and you can call for your buddy (who still has a tag). The quoted regulation's trying to convey the fact that after you've filled your tag you are done shooting for the day.

No tag = No bang, bang!

Definition of "Hunting" in Ontario;

HUNTING;

Includes lying in wait for, searching for, being on the trail of, pursuing, chasing or shooting at wildlife, whether or not the wildlife is killed, injured, captured or harassed. You need a hunting licence to do any of these things, except where the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, 1997, states otherwise.
