Dogleg if you warn me in advance, I can book a nice Springbuck hunt during the Hunting season (May - August). You can definetely combine it with your other hunts, you need 2 days and if you come with us you dont pay dollar prices.

I'm going to be travelling through Johannesburg in 3 weeks and again in 5 (If I don't get stepped on) but won't have time to stop, this time. The idea is intrigueing though, as is the idea of hunting at local prices.

I wish. Man in my wildest dreams I put together a plains game hunt with lion and buffalo for me and my father. Looks like a great time.

This past weekend I went on a yearly hunt for springbuck. It's an unusually wet season, but on Friday it cleared enough for a good 4 hour session.
I shot 8, my friend also 8 and the other guys 3 each.

Looks like you guys had fun. :)

Can you describe a bit more about how the hunt was conducted (i.e. was it "spot and stalk" or a driven hunt?).

The springbuck look very nice indeed.

Powdergun: During our hunt in the eastern cape last year, the springbuck was delicious. (Actually, all of the game we ate was very tasty :D)

I guess this is like the cull hunts for mulies here in the prairies.

Good huntin followed by some good eatin. Thats why there will never be a season on Libs.

They are too full of crap. Even if you cook the sh*t out of them it will still leave a bad taste in your mouth.:sniper:

I've got to hunt Africa before I leave this world.

It was a typical "voorsit skiet", where each hunter gets a spot about 1000 yds apart (for obvious reasons) and the herds of springbuck are "stirred" by 2 farm workers on horses to break up the herd and chase them to the outer boundaries of the camp.

Once the shooting starts it often happens that the herd runs away right into the next guy waiting in ambush. I use a bi-pod wooden shooting stick and sit on the ground on a plastic bag filled with sheeps wool for a cushion.

Shooting distances varied from 90 yards (lots of meat damage) to 300 yards. I used my 30-06 with 155 gr match bullets at 3040 fps. Springbuck is not very tough to kill and the calibres used were .22 Hornet (border line), .223, .243 (ideal choice), 308, 270 and 30-06. I think that new .260 Remington would be the perfect springbuck calibre.

Because of all the rain the animals were very fat and the meat is extremely tasty. Roasted leg of springbuck, marinated in plain yoghurt or springbuck pie is a few of the excellent ways to enjoy this meat.

Kind of reminds me a Spanish Monteria......

How does a travelling Canuck get in on one of those ? book an outfitter ?

By law springbuck can only be hunted from May to August and the real nice venues like the one we use is spread by word of mouth. When overseas hunters book they charge rediculous prices, but if an overseas hunter comes along in our group he will pass as a visiting overseas friend/family and pay "rand" prices. It's the same as when I try to hunt in Canada, I will probably pay through my neck?

My next hunt is on the 5th of July in the Kalahari dessert for Gemsbuck.

Same, Same.

We should setup a forum for hunting exchanges.

Example: Springbuck at your place in the Summer. Moose, Bear at my place in the Fall.

Spring turkey in Ontario, Fall muleys in Alberta etc. etc etc......

Hunters would have their accomodations taken care of (exchange), all they would have to do is travel and get liscences. I know certain hunts have to be booked through an outfitter if you are from outside the province but im sure this could work at a certain level.

Now that sounds like the best idea I have ever heard! I would love to hunt a Big Brown Bear!

That sounds almost identical to our "driven hunt" last August (except that our drivers were on foot). It was a fun way to wrap up our hunt and quite a bit different from how we hunt back home ('cept, maybe, gophers :) ).

We used .270 Win. (130 gr TSX & Interbond) and 7x57 (140 gr. TSX)
