Hey Guys,

Don't be too hard on me for this newbie question as I am new to the "Battle Rifle" hobby. It all started with, "Dad that gun looks bad-a$$, you should get it !!!" So here we are. What I want to know is; who services a weapon like this? and how accurate can I make it? Heck, it's a .308 I want to hunt with it! The rifle is stamped Springfield Armory M1A serial No. 217 ### it is in very good condition. Sorry I have no idea how to attach any pictures, but I was able to use a small photo of the rifle for my avatar. Thanks!

The M14/M1A rifle can be made very accurate.................Depend on how much time and money you want to spend.

The M14/M1A platform is a finicky thing.............they are maintenance intensive, and can require indepth tuning/tweaking to maximize their potential.

If you are looking for bolt gun accuracy, it can be done but at a heftly price tag. I have owned/built several M14 type rifles that could hold their own against custom bolt guns, but those builds were in the $5000.00 and up range............this would entail stripping the rifle down to the receiver and replacing everything else with USGI/Match parts.

There are little things you can do to make the rifle more accurate relatively cheap........

-National Match Op Rod Guide
-Check gas system for play and shim if needed
-Ream the flash suppressor
-Replace op rod spring with the USGI version
-Glass/steel bed the action into the stock........ (requires someone with bedding experience)....But I see you have what looks to be a SAGE or similar CM14 CHassis so bedding is not required......

Read the the M14 FAQ Tips and Tricks post near the top of the forum. This will give you a better insight into the M14 and what can be done to it.

The rifle is fine to hunt with as is................just get some ammo and go out and shoot the thing!!!!!! ; :D)

Ah... I see you are in BC. Try to catch an M14Doctor Clinic whenever he can hold one! These clinics take up a lot of time to arrange! ;)

Cheers,
Barney
