Can anyone recommend a quality holster (with secure retention, not a "race" holster) for a Springfield Armory XD .40? It would be primarily for range use, and I would prefer something that will not cause unnecessary finish wear. I was looking at this one, available from a local store, but I was unsure of its durability, as it's just molded plastic .... but then, I suppose so is my gun

Any other suggestions of what I should consider?

I can definately recommend the Blackhawk SERPA units...
I've got one for my Glock and another 1911 model..
Great retention, intuitive release and seems to mar the finish less than the
unbelievably crappy units from Fobus.

I have the Fobus SP-11, it sucks, and causes finish wear. The other
one is a Safariland 6004 Drop Leg, purchased from Wolverine Supply.
I love it. Next i'll be picking up a serpa, and leaving the sp at the range.

Plastic holsters are no more prone to wearing the finish of your gun than any other IF you maintain them. Because they can pick up a static change and attract dust, you need to wipe them down with a damp cloth occasionally. You may also want to try an anti static spray.

I bought a Blade Tech dropped and offset for my XD40, don't like the dropped feel. The holster works great but I'm so used to the height my Fobus holster. I thought that the dropped and offset would be a faster draw, maybe just need to practice more with it. The Blade Tech was $99 the Fobus was $30. Xray

I was also considering a Serpa but changed my mind after reading several daming reviews. One CGN member pm'd me about his experience with a Serpa and strongly advised against it. As a result, I have recently ordered the Safariland 5186 (belt holster) as I already have several DL holsters.

The finish on my XDs slide is pretty weak. I don't think it matters what holster you buy, if you draw enough, it will wear, regardless. Get one that suits you best and chalk the wear up to normal use. I have a G-Code that I like, but it is only pressure tenson. Not sure if they make anything else...

I have been usung the Cen Dex.
So far the best of the synthetics that Ive tried so far.
but wellhave to see how it handles in the long run.
also use the one of the older Black hawk drop legs
better than some of the newer stuff from Black hawk.
untill I get a Safriland 6004.the best of any drop leg rig

regards

i have a bladetech paddle holster, it works great... but the xd's finish is pretty weak... i'd still recommend it tho, i just love this holster

I use one of the XD Gear holster, and it's great..

one thing to remember though.. if you plan on using it with IPSC, then you may want to consider getting one without a release button. (If you have a button/trap on the holster it has to be used during the course of fire, which takes longer to draw). the XD Gear which is by adjustable tension on the trigger guard is enough to keep it securly in the holster, and can be loosened for shoots..
