Springfield XD9 - red thingy?

Just picked up a new Springfield Amory XD9 in OD with "gear." Great pistol, fits me well, shoots where I point it. I think I'm in love again.

Along with the "gear" there was a small red plastic clip, that is not mentioned anywhere in the manual. Its hard plastic, L-shaped, with a grooved circle on one end. What is it? Some type of chamber flag? Disassembly tool?

I'm stumped.

Put the 2 prongs in the chamber, and the tail hangs out.
It's used to show you are clear on the firing line. If it's
in, a bullet can't be, and the slide cannot drop forward.

Could also be a Transcona toothpick. They usually floss
with a rope over there.

Something in the end of a barrel tells you jack ####....you can have a round in the pipe and tuck that in the end of your barrel....is your gun clear? No, they are designed to be inserted into the chamber so that it is impossible to have a round in the chamber and impossible for the slide to lock or go into battery....also being red and sticking out gives positive visual sign that the chamber is empty and the gun safe. Are they fail safe? if done properly to the way they are designed to use, yes.

You could also place it behind the trigger to prevent it from be depressed.
