Squirrels, Puff Balls and a Skull

I'm assuming the big white object is the puff ball? The one's around here are golf ball sized, brown and give off a greenish cloud of dust when you step on them. I've always wondered what the attraction is to eating them, but I see now that there must be different kinds. :D

Ok bud you are just getting to them too late they have a nice firm white flesh much like any other mushroom.

On Saturday I ate about 1 1/2 lbs of oyster mushrooms I found while scouting. Man were they good - a special treat.

How do you prepare the squirrels? Bone them out or eat 'em KFC style?

These ones were dusted in seasoned flour and deep fried bone in, but I often debone them and make nuggets. It's important to avoid over cooking them and when cooked properly they're very tender and juicy like a chicken wing. They're great boned out, ground with bacon, and turned into some mighty fine burgers too.

They all start off bright white and firm before quickly turning yellow and gradually getting darker until the inside is dry. They then "puff" and release the spores to reproduce.

I found this big one when it was firm and bright white. I cut chunks off to fry for the first two days and on the third day I had to toss some as it was already much softer and turning dark yellow. You should eat them within 48 hours of picking.
