Hey guys and gals, I am acquiring a ruger sr-22 near the end of this month, and Im pretty clueless on some mods, optics, etc. that I should be looking to purchase.

I actually should have gotten a different .22 because I really like longer more accurate shots, but I couldnt turn down the tacticool factor! I did look into a .223 tactical, but in the end I came upon a deal on a ruger sr-22 that was too good to pass up. (do people really pay 1500+ for a good looking tactical .223?!)

Anyways the .22 is just going to be used for plinking around my farm, target shooting, a little critter hunting, maybe a few coyotes that get too close at night, that sort of thing.

My brother in law was suggesting maybe a bushnell 9-24 40 mm scope that had a laser sight in it, or something? Along with a flash light, and of course a few 25 shot magazines.

I have tried to search for sr-22 mod threads, but the term sr-22 seems to be a no go, so thought I would start my own thread.

Any positive advice, discussion, etc. would be great, and appreciated, thanks.

a 9-24 scope on an sr is pretty much rediclous and useless,

auto bolt release mod, red dot, 25rd mages, and any fancy bolt on junk you feel like. done deal

i had a scope on mine for a while, and enjoy it much more with a red dot

Try SR22 for the search - no dash. Also, check for the 'tactical 22' threads http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=480561&highlight=TACtical

LOTS of stuff

If you like you sr-22 but find it to be shooting large groups, try dlask. My friend bought an aftermarket barrel and a few other goodies there. Shoots amazing groups now. He also moded the trigger, it's much better also.....
Plee plee please stay away from the 50 rounds drums, you'll thank me for it!!!!!

Thanks for the replies so far guys.

Monkey, I know very little about scopes and whatnot, could you elaborate why hte scope my bro in law mentioned is ridiculous? Is it like too overkill or...? I wish I had a friend with a red dot so i could try it out, I have an image in my mind of what it would be like to use one, and I dont know if I would like it or not! I acually like open sights, but want to expand my horizons a little.

Hodaka, thanks for the tip on the keyword to search, will give that a shot after I finish this reply.

Airwolf, thanks for the tips on the dlask barrel, I will try and find some info and do some reading. What length of barrel does your friend have on his rifle? I will stay away from the drum mags for sure! As much as i would like to have 50 shots to spend, I dont care for the way they look, and have read they can be problematic.

Keep the replies coming guys, much appreciated!

I think your brother in law meant a 6-24x40 never heard of a 9-24 and it is alot of power for a rimfire, the SR should shoot good out of the box, save your cash for goodies, and optics a 4-12 pineridge rimfire is a good cheap scope that works well on them, dlask does make a quad rail system for the SR thats cool and fits great, you can also change out the stock to a pagpul or other ar style if you want, just have fun with it and as for costs $1500 on a SR22 is not unheard of lol, and some ar 223s are more like $2500 pimped out

Yes 6-24 scope is way over kill for a 10/22 based rifle , any thing in that magnification range will be 1/2 the size of the gun, I made a trolling thread called " I is precission naow" It's a picture of a 4-16x scope on my sr22 find the thread and u will see what I mean!!!

Red dots are a middle ground between iron sights and scopes, they are less accurate then a scope but are way quicker to acquire a target , iv got a cheapie and consistently ding a 6 x10" gong at 200 yds, maybe hit up your local store and look threw one and see what you think befOre making up your mind

Yeah I wouldnt go any more magnification then 4-12. I have a 3-9x40 on my SR22 and I find I would like just a little more magnification some times on the long shots. I plan on putting a 4-12x? in mildot recticle. But, for most a 3-9 would be plenty. My SR is set up as a long range rifle hence the need for a 4-12. May I also suggest getting a scope with an adjustable objective. It will help with the parallax at different ranges.

Ditto on the adjustable objective. .22's are good out to about 80 yards before they begin to drop off a lot. An AO scope will give you the best accuracy from 20 to 100m. Most non adjustable parallax scopes are fixed at 100m.
I'm pretty happy with the Vortex Crossfire 4 - 12 AO on my 10/22, under $200.

Not much to add, but I've seen HK416 (German AR-15) sell for over $4000 bare of any modifications or scopes/dots! So yea, people are willing to pay...

Well it depend on your goal. If you are benchrest shooting, the more power the better. I can't believe anyone can see there bullet holes at 200 yards w/ a 3x9 scope. I have a 10x40 power with a 3x booster. I try for tight groups. Hitting a gong at 200 is tough, hitting a gopher at 200 is harder.
The AO is a huge help! IMO try and find one with the adjustment at the ocular lens side. With my AO being at the other in, it's tough to adjust while looking through the scope.

I shoot eggs @ 200 yards with mine, I have a 16" Dlask barrel on it mind you, but only due to a unfortunate acident to the original, BSA sweet 22 rimfire scope with 40Gr turret, dlask tactical rings, ace skeleton stock, have a spikes tactical fake silencer but my son made me 1 to resemble that of a 408 chey tac rifle, oh and a custom turret cover on the scope as I bought it missing 1 so the kid built that to at the machine shop, 3/4" riser rail and dlask quad rail system, tuffer buffer and some other internal goodies like edge extracter, titanium firing pin etc by power customs and VQ

its an endless project if you want it to be from 12.5" barrels and short quad rails to foregrips, stocks, grips, sights, optics, lights, lazers, muzzle breaks, fake suppressors.. imagination is everything ;)

OH and if your gonna play with stocks etc BUY a ar15 wrench for it so your not killing the screwdrivers on castle nuts ;) :D

Many seem to think that the bone stock SR22 is the most accurate 10/22 from Ruger's factory offerings, so you didn't "buy the wrong gun". Good scope, clean up the trigger, and try all brands of ammo, 'till you get tight groups!

Any good links where you can buy some of these goodies, such as the short Diask barrel and short quad rail

dlask.com in vancouver sells barrels, recievers, quad rails, forends and asorted pins, bolts etc

bits of peices in vancouver area sells power customs goodies and revolution stocks as well as green mountain barrels

blaxun on CGN sells magpul goodies, stocks grips etc

vinzer sports carries ncstar stuff for cheaper add ons like risers, rails, lights lasers etc

and the EE forum on CGN for a pile of goodies like yankee hill machine forends etc as well as anything else ar and rimfire

basicaly the sr22 is a ar platform so all ar furniture will fit on it

I put a 3-9X32 CenterPoint scope on mine and piggy backed it with a blue dot. It also has on it a Magpul stock, T.M.S. picatinny tactical rings, Dlask rail system, E.R Shaw threaded barrel, Fab Sports can, Tactical Solutions black bolt, Tactical Innovations charging handle, V.Q. hammer, Tactical Innovations bolt release, Hornet mag release and just waiting on a nice AR15 pistol grip.
