As I understand it, Ruger produced a rifle and a pistol both with the name SR-22. Is that correct? If so, why would they do that. I have two kids and gave them different names to avoid confusion.

I think the ruger 10 22 rifle came first.
Then the ruger charger pistol
The 25 round mags were designed and manufactured for the rifle, long before the pistol ever came about

Sorry I forgot about the SR pistol.

I also thought this was dumb to give the rifle and pistol the same name. As far as the Charger pistol goes, we can all thank Ruger for that one and getting the 25 round 10/22 mags banned for a million Canadian 10/22 owners.

I think the OP is referring to the sr-22 pistol. Which is completely different from the charger pistol. Which just adds more confusion. I completely agree ruger screwed up on naming things the same. On the other had ruger has a whole SR series of hand guns I have an SR-9 I'm not a huge fan of it but my GF loves to shoot it and is comfortable for her to shoot.

Looks like Ruger does not make a variant of the 10/22 called "SR22" anymore.

It was an odd choice for a model name in the first place. The model name is probably much more valuable as applied to the SR22 pistol, which is part of the larger SR- pistol lineup.
