SR comp with MR1

Hey Guys,
Have not been on here for a bit. I am thinking of doing some service rifle comps. I am former army and current tac officer with lots of shooting experience. Here's the caveat....

I was considering using a Benelli MR1 to avoid the restricted nonsense, and to do some coyote hunting when I get the chance.

1. Great idea, or merely good idea?

2. would 1-5 power variable scope be useful.

Any concerns re; above set up?

Wouldn't be the best choice if you're planning on putting a lot of rounds through it. The barrel is quite thin and the gas system is crimped on. I'm not sure how easy it is to get replacement barrels for the rifle, but it would be quite a lot of work to re-barrel if one couldn't be obtained easily. You can't beat an AR-15 for parts availability, and in SR stuff breaks.

1-5x works. You'll probably end up keeping it on 5x for SR, but the 1x may be useful if you plan on shooting any CQB.

If your limiting yourself to NR, then it would work, so long as you're comfortable with the ergonomics.

SR kIcks ass, so do whatever it takes to get yourself up and running.
 
Weaver makes a true 1-5 tactical offering.

Didn't you get a chance to see them at SHOT Kombayotch? All their new "higher end" FFP optics are 5X erectors.

That being said, they're not commonly available, and there *are* probably better buys.

I use a 2-8 for SR, and find I'm only using 5-8 power for SR, and usually dial it down to 2-3 for CQB. Works great. Nikon M223 2-8.

I will admit, I was using the full 8X from 300 out to 500, and going forward I'd look at something in the 2.5-10 range, as, It'll still meet the bottom end i use, but, I'd enjoy even higher magnificaiton for the deliberates out past 300. That being said, you don't shoot a lot at those longer ranges, and my scores weren't too bad, so, it's an issue of diminishing returns....

I've successfully shot CQB with a 1.5x5x for a couple of years. At the last CQB match of the season in 2012 I won with a 3x Elcan.

A true 1x variable can offer advantages but it's not essential for these types of competitions IMO. That being said, we also shoot a very linear course of fire. If a person has to engage targets that are set well apart (say 3 gun or similar) having a wider field of view offered by a 1x may prove to be more advantageous. At least I can see that being the case. I have not tested that theory. Maybe later this year if I get a chance to shoot a 3gun type event.

Just a point for consideration. The match winner was shooting a C79 optic. Success at this sport is not bought with equipment, talent and skill play a larger role.
That being said, if I had money to spend on a new optic right now, I would go with a 2.5x10.

If it was available at Shot, I missed it and the sales guy neglected to mention it. I would think he would have since I was taking pictures of their 1.5-5x24mm and 2-10x36mm FFP while talking to him. I specifically told him that I was interested in new tactical FFP optics...

Is it a 1.5-5 and not a 1-5? They list it as a 1-5 on the site along with all the other 5x optics.

Perhaps that's where I'm getting confused then. If that's the case then bad on Weaver for listing it as a 1-5 when it's only a 1.5-5. Interestingly they've bumped their MSRP on those optics up from 799 for the 2-10 to like 1199 now... Where'd the extra 400 in value come from?
 
I think they just aren't listing the digits after the decimal on thier site. I assume this is the case since they don't list a1.5-5x24mm and the one I saw had the CIRT reticle. It was not FFP either...

Ahh, I see. So they're lumping it in with the other stuff, and "rounding". That's too bad. Is the 2-10 a true 5X erector than?

Man that's pretty dodgy of them, especially considering the price they're asking... The website itself is kinda crappy too, again, especially for such a "high-end" optic....
 
That was all super helpful guys. I carry a c8 all dang day, and I was hoping to go with something different and non-restricted. I d consider
an xcr or tavor. Just so damn expensive.
