So,
I figured out the SR22.
Once I accepted that the GSG drum mags are crap, and that the two i own are totally worthless pieces of crap... it was simple.
I ran 6 kinds of 22LR thru a butler creek steel lip mag on my setup and identified the real issue with the SR22.
Cycle rate.
Logic:
subsonic ammo runs fine, 25 rounds to the mag and rapid fire capable. (My timney trigger allows me to clear the mag in about 3 or 4 seconds.)
regular velocity ammo only allows me to load 20 rounds in the magazine, a full mag results in single round firing, then charging manually, to eject a bent or shaved round or a dry fire because it didnt grab the next round.
high velocity ammo (including match grade) only lets me load 15 rounds in the magazine. same problems.
The issue seems to be the stock original spring and charging rod just cant spring back hard enough with the bolt flying that fast from the higher power ammo.
The mag cant keep up.
10 round ruger rotary drum mags have no issue with anything, they are perfect. I want a 500 round drum made by ruger.
I discovered this with my stock SR22, but then after installing the timney trigger, Power custom titanium/chrome lightened match bolt with all titanium extractor and bits, and a urethane recoil reducer (to replace the steel pin at the rear which has quieted the action) I find the problem now extreme enough to really trace.
Basically, if i want to run subsonic ammo i'm fine as it is.
But if i want HV (which i do, exclusively) I need to upgrade the spring and charging handle/rod with one that is stiffer/hardened. that will slow the cycle rate slightly and allow it to cycle ammo from the butler creek mags reliably with the right ammo.
The upgrades come with 3 spring sets, but its hard to find them in canada.
In america there are several very high quality offerings...
Does anyone know what to buy in our market? It needs a hardened rod, and a selection of springs. A cool/extended charging handle would be nice too.
And for the record, when this thing runs smooth, it is an absolute JOY. Running subsonic ammo like that was so buttery smooth and the cycle rate so fast it's amazing.
