So my new to the hobby neighbour is looking for something tactical kit for his his kids. All three went to get their Rpal and Pals! Yay, more people into the hobby!
They asked me about the SR22 vs the other tactical Ruger, which I'm not familiar with.

I know the old school SR22 some say is on the heavy side, but robust.

How is this other Ruger offeringing? Is the stock any good? Or SR22 still the better of the two? They only plan to mount a red dot, and they prefer the more forward mount so better for both eyes open shooting technique. Decent rail? Is the stock chassis pretty secure? Can the the one pictured use the 10rd rotary mags? Any thoughts I can pass along to the new guys which may be a better choice?

Imo the sr22 is the way to go. It is a little heavier but its solid . I've only held the Ruger tactical at a store but it feels very cheap compared to the old sr22

just to throw a wrench in things.

Has he looked at the GSG-16?

Ruger only has 10 rd mags and the GSG has 22rd mags.

GSG-16 has an even more taticool look and adjustable stock that's a kit with kids.

Good points. I will tell them about the GSG 15 also...I did not think of that one. I think they are steering away from the SR22 due to weight (13yr old and 14yrd) for now.
EDIT: Haha...I see GSG about same weight as SR22. They should handle it and see how it balances for them vs the SR22 (which they tried at the range awhile ago).

My understanding is that Ruger discontinued the SR22R rifle, anyone, feel free to comment on whether that is indeed correct or not.
I was looking for SR22R last year until I read that they were discontined, so I ended up purchasing a standard 10/22.

The GSG 15 and GSG 16 are slightly different

GSG 16- 5.84 lbs
GSG 15 -6.45 lbs

The GSG 16 is cheaper, lighter and has an adjustable stock. I have one and me and the kids LOVE it

The SR 22 takes the three magazine cluster. Those are the ones with three 10 round magazines in a triangular clamp arrangement. With an extended magazine release, they are very quick to swap to the next one and the whole thing does not stick out like a 20 round magazine.
On the other hand, if you want to really go over the top, there is a 100 round drum magazine available for the GSG.

The GSG 16 is a lot of fun to shoot. The emphasis is on fun. Its a great little plinker. The only negative is the take down. Once you do it a few times its becomes a lot quicker. I have the 110 round drum and that its just a lot of fun.

Got to get them push pins ;)

I owned and loved a Ruger SR22.
It was a joy to shoot and was very accurate.
I sold it because of the entire black gun hysteria and now shoot a Ruger 10/22 Custom Target.

The original SR-22 with aluminum chassis was (and still ios) a solid and well-built offering. High quality.

The new Ruger Tactical with the ATI stock is plastic crap. Their extended mag well makes using 10-rounders a challenge, and the cheap plastic stock has a tendency to retain the magazines itself. Garbage. Pass.

I specifically bought a Ruger SR-22 for this exact reason (and because I always wanted on and this was a good excuse to finally track down an almost new example). Cause phuck you Trudeau, Blair and the rest of you Lieberal pieces of trash. I’ve already got a couple sideways looks at the range.

Good to know these little details. I know the SR22 was a good sturdy setup. I did have one several years ago when they came out. Sounds like Ruger may have gone to the new ATI stock for cost savings....and that the new quality reflects like.
