I really enjoy taking an old gun that is still serviceable and bring it back to itself and then taking them afield in the fall. Every winter I do so with at least one. I bought this Savage-Springfield 18D shotgun on EE a month+ ago and tore it down and began working on it as a shorter barrelled version of my Marlin 55 that I use for ducks/geese out of a boat (that I also built myself)...

...stock stripping (beechwood), barrel painting (pigmented epoxy), mechanism clean-up, butt pad added yields this (bottom pic)...

...will ream and tap for choke tubes some time over the summer...nice pair to have for ducks...one long distance and the other for close/cripples. (The Marlin 55 was in rough shape as well when I was given it last fall.)

I wish I could ask you about the teardown of your Springfield 18d. I just acquired dad's old 18d. I do not know how to take it apart to take care of the rust.
