STA and STW

STW is Shooting Times Western....it was a magazine that was reponsible for developing/promoting a few new catridges although the 7mm STW was the only one that ever caught on commercially.

Correctly, the 7mm STW stands for Shooting Time Westerner

It was 'invented' by Layne Simpson, a writer and contributor to Shooting Times, back in 1979.

I think that's already been clarified except for the fact that he was an editor with Shooting Times and it's Times not Time as you seem to be such a stickler for detail.

Glad to see you made it over to CGN.

I've been really thinking about getting a 350 super mashburn or STA recently; 5000 ft.lbs of smack down is not too far off the mark set by the 378 wby. Hmm, maybe a 358-378...

I don't know much about the STW (except that they are harsh on barrels - so pretty much d1ck). I have been looking at one for a awhile, Is this the proverbal "finger of god" cartridge, or a minor improvement over an existing chambering? What would it compare to?

I don't think they are any harder on barrels than any other fast calibre. Keep barrels clean and don't get them too hot at the range and there is no reason for barrel life not to be long. The 7mm STW is an improvement over the 7mm RM. I got mine to replace a .264 mag and it seems to do that well. Nothing revolutionary here but it is a great all-round, flat-shooting catridge and heck, I got mine in a brand new Sako for $525. It shoots like a dream and is a true 500 yard+ rifle with the right optics and the right shooter but I guess that can be said of many calibres.

For me, mine is the finger of God but that's just because it shoots so well and when I pull the trigger, I know something is going to die.

I had a 358STA some years back, it's a heck of a cartridge and will get the 250gr nosler moving really close to 3000 and the 225gr X will move out @ 3100It can be built in a decent weight rifle as well, mine was just slightly over 8lbs fully loaded and wasn't to brutal to shoot.Another one I should have kept!

Having owned three 7mmstws myself,I can tell you that they are no harder on barrels than cartridges such as the 264 win mag or 257,270wby.A good 140gr bullet such as the tsx or mrx launched at 3500fps makes short work out of elk or moose,as well as deer or smaller game.
