Any of you guys had any luck running a Stag 10 with a 18.6’’ with .308 175gn bullets?
I’d like to try a load dev once I can go out, and really hoping I can ring my 12’’ gong @ 500 yds with them.

I’ve got a load test to run on 175gr SMK’s and 178gr Hornady BTHP’s. I’ve actually had these for over a year waiting on day to test em all out and I’m hoping to go out this Friday. It’s on a 20” barreled stag but that’s negligible for the most part. If I do go out this Friday I’ll let you know how it goes.

What powder? Seated at 2.800(mag length)?

Yes please do,
I was going to buy 500 rounds of ball ammo M80 149gn for 500$+ship+tx.
And realizing I have over 2000 SMK 175 projectiles sitting here for my bolt guns, and over 20 pounds of Varget, it may make more sense for me to buy an example of 200 PRVI brass casings and get reloading for the AR10.

Would come out cheaper than the M80 ammo, and maybe more accurate, as I know nothing of short barrel+ heavy pill combinations.
All my bolt guns sport a 26’’+brake barrel.

I have Hornady Superformance 178 BTHP as well as the same bullet loaded to about 2500fps from the stock 18.6" barrel. I get a lot of primer leakage from the heavier bullets. It has lead to some pitting in my bolt face... I am in search of an adjustable gas block but it seems a quality unit is hard to find. Keep that in mind as you work up. I'd hate for someone else to have the same problem.

1:10 twist is meant to shoot heavy bullets like 175 gr and up, bulk NATO ammo with 145 gr and 150 gr were designed for 1:12 twist

So you are getting pressure issues,
Are primers flattening or having heavy ejector marks?

Being relatively new to fully semi-automatic rifle reloading, how does bleeding more gas or less gas affect the pressure?

Superformance is your problem. They are very hot loads.

Look for an SLR sentry adjustable gas block. CTC supplies has them but you can also get them from brownells. They're expensive but quality. I've been running 175gr SMK's at around 2700 fps with varget and I haven't had any pierced primers with Federal GMM primers. Are you using a high pressure bolt?

175 sierra tipped, imr 4064 42.5 gr, win large primer, win case.2.8 ''

Decent groups, never shot passed 200 y.
Tried small base die, did not see any difference as oppose to rcbs regular competition die

Regards

Thanks!
IMR 4064 is a little hotter than Varget, so 41.5gn of Varget would make a nice load dev start point.
What speed you launching them at?

175g smk with 43g varget +/- works great.

Funny, because in my Savage 10 .308 with 26’’ IBI M40 profile barrel,
It’s my EXACT recipe to shooting sub 1/2 moa 10 shot groups at 300M.
It used to be 42.7 but moved to 43.0 some 2000 rounds + later.

And when loading to 2.800’’ (AR10 mag lenght), I have exactly 20 thou jump in my Savage.
A huge shoutout to IBI for reaming a chamber with so much thought in it, it cannot be coincidence.

I had great success with Federal Premium 185 Gr Berger Juggernauts. Out of 10 factory loads i tested the Federal premium 185s and Hornday match 168s were both sub MOA.

My handloads do the same despite being 100fps slower. I spoke with Hornady and they did say that the ammo in their case is the issue. Adjustable gas block is highly recommended by them.

The internals are stock aside from a Geiselle SSA-E trigger. 2700fps is impressive, how long is your barrel?
