I have a Tipton universal bore guide, it's not perfect, but it works. As for do you need one...yes.
Very silly question and certainly no jab at anyone 'cause I have been looking into getting a universal one myself.
That said, if you're using a brass or carbon fiber rod and brass jags, seeing that the steel used for barrels and extensions are much harder than brass and composite rods/jags and cotton patches, how does one damage them using normal cleaning methods?

It’s more to keep the cleaning agents in the chamber/barrel out of the action

Grit, crap, corruption, etc., may contain bits of stuff much harder than barrel steel. It's not the rod, or pull through that does the damage, it's the little bits of sand, carbon, and other minerals present. If I'm not mistaken the guide keeps the rod from "bowing" in such a way that it pushes forcefully against the throat.
