Stag 15 - feeding problem

I took my new Stag 15 out to the range today, and put 130 rounds through it (55grain FMJ). During the first 80 rounds, I had 5 misfeeds (i.e. the bolt jammed the bullet just below the feedramp). I tightened the magazine catch a little bit, and put another 50 rounds through it, and had no misfeeds at all. I am pretty new to ARs so I am not sure what is normal or not. But, is an overly loose magazine catch a common cause of misfeeds? What are some other common causes?

Thanks

P.S. The gun was completely clean when I took it out today, so I think dirtiness was not an issue.

Sounds like you fixed it. KUDOS for figuring it out as I wouldn't have known as noob AR15 owner.

Yes a loose mag catch can cause the exact problem you describe.

Other causes:

Poor design (out of spec.) not much chance of that being it's a Stag.

Bad ammo, not much chance of that because it was 55g FMJ.

Bad mags.

I had some problems with some hunting ammo as the crimp was not that great, as well I had two mags that needed a tiny bit of dremel work to the front of the mag where the rounds bank up towards the chamber.

That makes sense too. Maybe the mags have rough edges where the ammo feeds. I must admit, I was surprised at how tinney, sharp, and basically crappy the mags were. But, I gather that most AR mags are like that. I have two mags, and I had at least one misfeed with each.

Yes, hopefully that was the issue. It was a real downer.... those FTFs really dampened my enthusiasm about this gun. Hopefully, that was the end of it.
