staighten barrel

Depending where you are from Ron Smith has straightened many barrels.
Call him first 403-631-2405 and talk to him first.
very competent man with guns, barrels etc.

A friend brought me his dad's cherished rifle that was bent on a tree while strapped across the front of a quad. I sent it off to fellow CGN'er Louthepou as it was a real nice enfield hunting rifle. He in turn sent it to Spencer at Gunco (?).
25 bucks plus some return shipping and I couldn't believe it was the same barrel LOL everyone was extremely happy all around.

I would vote against doing it without proper tools.
It is easy to bend it to much and in different place than intended.
With HD lathe, two brass centres, good .001" indicator and wooden block in front of tool post is quite doable.
Forget "pipe wrench", "duct tape" hammers and such....that's a bubba's way the fastest way to disaster.

i would disagree with your method here as the barrel's bore is not always concentric with the outside. Eyeballing down the barrel would be better than indicating off the outside

I have straightened a barrel with a 10 ton press and 2 wooden blocks.

I set it up so I could look though the barrel as I pressed it back. It went easy and I knew the the barrel was straight when the reflection was seemless right through the bore.

When it was bent I could see a shadow opposite of the bend.

Starightning with a vice is doable but you could bend too far if you aren't looking through it while bending it.
