I have a stainless steel barrel that I want to get blued / blackened. I know you can't parkerize stainless but what other options other than coating are there. The barrel is on a 700 action and I want the barrel to match the receiver. Is this something I can do or is it recommended to have a competent gunsmith do it. Thanks.

Unless this is a custom caliber barrel, I would sell the gun and buy one with the appropriate finish. A lot of people do look for the stainless/blue combination - I do have one in 350 RM (Ruger 77) and I love the combination. Will be putting a synthetic stock on it and then I will have an excellent foul weather hunting gun.

I had a stailess blued back in 70s gun was madehttp://www.hartbarrels.com/ by

They sent it out some where to have it done, very nice job, cost me $65 then

I believe Ron Smith blackens Stainless Steel, or you could have it/or the entire rifle powder coated or teflon coated ..... for this you could have corlane sporting goods do the work

Duke,
The barrel is a Mike Rock 5R 22" fluted barrel on a 700 action with a McMillan A-5 stock. The original barrel was a 700P factory Remington. I want the barrel the match the receiver and if it's too much of a hassle, I'll just take the Krylon to it.

Brownell's sells a product made for blackening SS. Same idea as bluing with the same issues about getting the result evenly coloured.

Where can get Gun Kote. Thx.

I'm not sure where Striker got it, but I sent him a PM pointing him this way to answer for you. Give me a couple minutes and I'll post a pic of the gun that shows the barrel.

ETA: My guns are being stored with a friend, so I only have pics I took previously, but it does show the barrel. Point to note that I took a key and lightly scratched it to see if it would flake off and show the silver again, but it didn't happen. I'll have to see the long term effects, but from my little bit of playing with it it's quite resilient.:

I get mine directly from K&G Coating. They are very close to getting a Canadian distributor. Not sure where they are with that though.
The Shooting Edge use to carry it.

 ..
that ain't covered under warranty. :D
If you scratch it deep enough to remove metal, the finish will come off..
We did the same thing Rob did with a piece of receiver, then threw it in a bucket of salt water and left it for 2 weeks. Anywhere we coated didn't rust, nor did the spot we rubbed with a car key.

Chemical blackening of stainless steel barrels that are fitted to CM action is very possible, I own several rifles that are all matte black and match perfectly, despite having 2 dissimmilar metals.
The finish is very durable, just as durable as blued steel.
I only know of 1 shop in Canada that does this process, there may be others I do not know of though.
HWSNBN has done several rifles for me in blackened stainless. Excellent work and lasts up well. I have had several other rifles coated with different coating, none have stood up as well a chemical blackening. Coatings are just that , a coating , and how well it lasts is all dependent on how much residual oils remain in the steel. Needless to say prep work before a coating is applied determines how well it will stick.
Chemical blackening actually changes the color of the steel, it like blueing is a form of controlled oxidization.
I saw LRCs Dakota posted several times on this forum maybe he would like to show it off again it was chemically blackened by HWSNBN.
