Well last Sat, I was at the local gunstore and noticed that a used Ruger Stainless Single Six had just come in for sale. As I had spent the last 2 months trying to find a stainless 5.5" bbl single six, I confirmed that it had the second cylinder and decided to buy it. As I had just received my blued single six and was very impressed with it's accuracy on the weekend, I was pretty excited to pick it up today. When I brought it home, I began cleaning it and realized that I couldn't figure out which cylinder was the WMR and which one is the LR - both cylinders were fluted and neither were marked. When I looked at the cylinder face I noticed that I could visually see that the WMR cylinder had larger holes but other then that I had no idea which was which. It was not a huge deal as I realized that 22 WMR won't fit into a LR chamber. As I primarily like to shoot WMR once the cylinder is fitted on I won't switch at the range. So my question: Is this good to go? I haven't fired the revolver yet and I am pretty confident that it is safe to fire but I am a little wary that the cylinder isn't marked. I checked on the search and didn't see anything and looked on google but didn't really see anything about it. All the stainless single six revolvers look the same as my blued one. Here is a pic - the magnum cylinder is in both revolvers:

I checked Ruger's webpage and besides the year of manufacture, I am not seeing a lot on this - apparently the stainless was made in 1980 and the blued in 1983. All this being said, I have to say that I do prefer the fluted cylinder to the unfluted but it would be nice to know that this was how it was supposed to come from the factory.

One's counter bored and the other one isn't. Mag. case will not fit into LR cyl. as LR uses heeled bullet, therefore Mag. case is larger dia.

Mag won't fit in LR cylinder, and LR will look really wrong in the Mag cylinder (try it and see). Odd that yours isn't marked, mine has big writing all the way around the cylinder "22 Win Mag." Oh those 22WMR's are a hoot. I shoot the 22lr a lot more, but those WMR's sure are a lot more fun.

Gents: I know which one is the 22LR and which one is the 22WMR. My question, which should be clarified I guess, is - Is it normal that the cylinder isn't marked? My blued one clearly says 22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire on the cylinder but the stainless has no markings at all.

My single six is an early 3-screw and does not have and markings at all on cyls., one is counter bored, the other is not,no problem, .22lr is very loose fit in Mag. chambers and mags. won't fit in .22LR chambers.

After looking at my SSS (stainless Ser No. 262-2###x) and having a gander at my Manual (page 4)

Ammunition and Cylinder Information

The cylinder with the flutes is chambered for .22 Long Rifle.

The cylinder chambered for the .22 WMR cartridge is not fluted. It is marked .".22 WIN MAGNUM CAL."

My Blued Ruger's manual says the same thing too. That being said, the stainless is older. Maybe they original had the WMR cylinder fluted and changed production to prevent firing 22LR through a 22WMR cylinder?
