I just finished a custom build and am very very happy with the results.
However, the only thing that I would like to have possibly done is to have the stainless barrel blackened. I don't mind the sand-blasted matte silver look, but I think I still prefer black.
What options are available and who does the work?

I'm in a similar boat. I don't like the stainless look, and would like either a matte black finish, or matte charcoal grey. Is there someone I can send the barrel to in order to have it coated?

Don't waste your time and money on nitron blackening. Cerakote is the way to go.

... Don't waste your time and money. Buy a two-pack of black Sharpies.

Or, you know, just enjoy the stainless the way God intended it! Lol. Bright is beautiful!

Freddy: A friend has... with very good results... came out an even dark gray (not quite black) colour. Very pleasing. It almost looked like a traditional rust blue colour.

I owned a Nitron-Blackened GSR for a short time, I wasn't very impressed as it was quite thin and not very durable, the finish wore through on the bolt after very few cycles and it scratched easily.
I have,at one time or another, owned and shot firearms with professionally applied Gunkote, Duracoat, Cerakote, Arma-Coat as well as Parkerized.
My top recommendation for most durable goes to Cerakote followed closely by Arma-Coat applied by our very own Murdoc here on CGN.

The all time toughest coating of all by a landslide was a Remington XCR Compact that had the factory Trinyte PVD coating, it wouldn't even scratch it was so hard, after hundreds of rounds it never even wore down the jeweling on the bolt.
With the Nitron-Blackened Ruger I really was hoping to achieve something close to the factory applied Remington Trinyte, but it never even came close.

Probably not what the OP wanted to hear...but what can I say?

I heartily concur with this. I can't imagine a better (cosmetics asides) finish for a stainless hunting rifle than the black Trinyte coating that Remington uses on their XCRIIs.. it's the primary reason I like those rifles so much. I've had a little bit of silver show on the outside of the muzzle, but under the PVD is a further nickel layer on top of the stainless. The only part of the rifle that I've had rust appear is on the action screws.

I wish there was a place in Canada (or anywhere?) that commercially applied the same type of coating --- I'd get it put on my Kimber Montana in a heartbeat.

Well... all I have is time. If the nitron blackening doesn't work out, I'll go another route. Just for the record, I had a Tikka T3 bolt shroud in a nitron finish, and it was SUPER durable... and that is why it impressed upon me. Like everything in life, it all depends on the prep work and who did the coating/finishing. My friend's rifle, that he did himself, looks great... holding up well.

I did a rusted 12gauge shot gun using 2000deg. exhaust pipe ceramic paint from CANADIAN TIRE. I sand blasted it first and then put parts in an oven ( yes wife was pissed and it stunk up the house) but it worked excellent. It is very durable and is a satin finish because it will not stay flat finish. You polish it and it looks nice. use dry rag to polish and then rub some gun oil on it.

I've used that VHT paint to restore vintage camping equipment. Very durable and will withstand direct flame without discoloring. Haven't tried it on a gun...yet. Very important to follow the directions on the can.

I recieved my stainless blackening kit from Caswell Canada earlier in the week. Finished the barrel I wanted black.
I'm posting some pictures for those of you that would like to see how it turns out.
This is before blackening.

This is how it turned out. Time will tell how it holds up.
