Stainless vs Blued ?

I'd like some first hand information on the difference between stainless vs blued steel barrels. Other than the obvious benefit of corrosion resistance are stainless barrels generally more accurate and or durable ?

I dont know if it is true or not but I read that stainless tubes have 10% longer barrel life compared to blued steel
 
Just finished PO Ackley's 'Handbook for Shooters & Reloaders' (a little light bedside reading....) and he talks a lot about barrels. He claims that the actual steel used doesn't make much difference re: barrel life, at least according to military ordnance folks, for whom a 10% improvement would mean big-time $$$$ savings. Apparently the big differences between all the dozens of kinds of commercial steel alloys and grades, at least from the gunsmith's perspective, are the metal's "machineability", and its hardness.

Now, in the real world of my house, where sometimes barrels aren't cleaned as frequently as they should be :oops: stainless barrels last a _lot_ longer. I love the extra little certainty that comes from 4140 steel, and it's been worth it on at least one occasion...

I thought some of the early Stainless Remmie barrels were "Blued" somehow ?
Oh and while I appreciate the Look of a Nice Blued Rifle with a wood stock...ALL my serious hunting Rifles are now SS :p

I have a blued stainless. Remington did indeed blue some of their Model 700 stainless barrels. Mine is a 7mm Rem mag.

I have rifles to shoot with not to look at.I choose stainless for the added corrosion resistance and the slight better resistance to throat erosion.
 
I own both, with three 700s in SS barrels and blued actions. Some synthetic, some laminated and some walnut.

I think it depends on the rifle and caliber.

Like who wants a SS M94 in 30/30 or a ghae 270 wsm in blued/walnut. That would be a waste of perfectly good wood :twisted:

AND I totally agree that a stainless synthetic in 7600 would be GROSS :!:
