I'd like to start practicing for IPSC events this coming spring but I'd like to firm up the decision I've made for my pistol of choice and what that means before I buy it.

I'm buying a G17 and and shortly after, a Lone Wolf Barrel from Questar. I've read the rules outlining the divisions and I believe this puts me in the Standard division, would I be correct? I'd sooner shoot Production but my ammo preference leans towards reloaded 9mm with cast lead, so that factory barrel falls short on two accounts.

I'll no doubt upgrade the sights and get the 3.5lb connecter, any suggestions on after market sights or other bits?

just use the regular barrel....I know lots of guys who used lead,...but make sure it is cleaned well. IF you use the original barrel,..you have a decent gun for production.

Striker fired type gun = Production. 9mm = minor

Not sure this post was very clear? ;)

I think I agree though???...leave it stock and shoot the lead but clean it well. Stay in production class with the G17. If you want dress up a pistol for standard.....no worries, but I'd use a Glock in .40 S&W before 9mm to make major and get more points.:D

You were right however, changing the barrel will move you to standard class shooting.

Seems like you've already made your decision. If you swap out the barrels then you will be in standard division shooting minor. This makes a difference in how you are scored.

A - 5 points for major / 5 for minor. (Steel targets that fall are A-zone targets only.)
B- 4 points for major / 3 for minor
B- 4 points for major / 3 for minor
B- 2 points for major / 1 for minor

In production everyone is scored the same. This scoring will probably not make that much of a difference starting out. Target transition, reloads, draw, movement with the gun will probably all have a greater impact on your score than the power factor. So have fun with whatever gun you decide to bring.

You can shoot lead out of your G 17 all day long. Just do what some Glock owners think they never have to do and that is clean the darn thing when you are done. If you are getting leading, use copper strands from Chor Boy pads wrapped around an old cleaning brush. Gets the lead out in a few strokes.

Take Care

Glock has made barrels for the G17 with cut rifling. I use one for shooting lead bullets. Police Ordnance may be able to point you towards a source if they don't sell it themselves.
