So, first time reloading, and I accidentally usen magnum instead of standard primers. I'm reloading 9mm pistol ammo, and started off in the middle of the road on powder weights. Bullets are 115g JHP and I used 6g power pistol. I've also got some 124g FMJ with 4.8g power pistol, but both have CCI magnum primers. If I shoot these, will my pressures be way too high and cause problems, or can I get away with using these 300 rounds without any problems?

Thanks.

If you shoot them you will be the first to know. If you try them pick the coldest day you can as that will keep the presure down a little bit.

I actually ran a comparison between standard and magnum primers in 357 mag and found no significant difference in the muzzle velocities

the test results can be found here

Interesting. I'd not have thought that the mag primers would have given a lower velocity.

Thanks for sharing that.

You proved what I have been saying for years. No difference whether you use a standard or a magnum primer.
I once did a 357 magnum test, the same as you did, using a Ruger Security Six and a Oehler to test the speed. I did just one five shot test, and I think, without looking at my book, the average velocity was only 5 fps difference.
I have also never noticed any difference between a magnum and a standard primer in rifles, either.
With your tests I was surprised at the great difference between the revolver and the Marlin rifle. I was expecting on the order of 300 fps, but yours was more like 500.

standard vs magnum pistol primers

heck I use what I have . I have used small rifle primers in 357 loads without any problems. and you said you did'nt use the top loads. I would'nt sweat it.
