Hi all !

After my first F-Class season with my budget Axis with a 12VLP barrel and laminated stock, I decided to change things a bit. Here is the old setup.

In fact, there will be 2 stocks. This one is the first, the other will go to my friend Eddycat here for his F-Class Savage.

Oh yes, almost forgot. Found a Shilen bull barrel to replace the 12vlp varmint barrel I had. First tests with 90 grains Berger gave me around 1/2 at 100 meters, so it will be good I think.

Shape of the new stock will look a lot like one of the Masterclass stock. Cheek riser will be adjustable, buttpad will move up and down and pivot (more on that later), full lenght rail in the front, but best of all, it will be in nice curly maple, finished with tung oïl to bring out the grain of the wood.

First, thanks to Eddycat. He got himself a small Taig lathe and started to work on my trigger guard, which turned out very nice. He will also work on cheek riser hardware.

Ok, pictures now. First one shows the general shape of the stock. The blue dotted line is my old stock for reference.

And here is the wood piece. It is not even sanded yet, I put a light coat of oïl just to get the idea.

To be continued !

Nice project, that should be a lot of fun.
I've been slowly trying to figure out what I'll do for next year as well.

I'm looking forward to the end result!!!

Tung oil is my favorite finish. Looks great and gives it a bit of a tacky feel, or are you going to wax it after?

***Just so Bob doesn't look mad I asked how he was going to finish it and then read through his post...he'd already answered my question, and then answered again.***

I love these threads, watching hand made projects come together is awesome. Wish I had the talent, time, and equipment to do a project like this one myself. Looking forward to the end results with GREAT anticipation!

Nice project. When did curly maple mean stripped maple. I thought curly meat birds eye. Little circles.

Sounds like marketing speak like "upper beaches" homes in Toronto.

I bought some Lepage exterior glue. I will cut the two halves in the board, glue them together, and start from there. There will be one glue line right in the middle, I'll use it to reference the center of the inletting. I'll post pics of the process. The board is 50 x 8 x 1 3/4. I will bring it to 1 9/16 or so, cut and glue so I'll have a 3 inch thick stock.

A bit of work today, preparing the wood. I surfaced the wood to a bit more than 1 1/2 inch, the Dewalt planer is still going strong. I took very light "bites" and the surface came out nice

Next draw the 2 halves on the board, cut on bandsaw

And glue the 2 parts with exterior grade glue

Next will be to square the top of the block, and start the inletting for the action

I am sure it will be another great looking finished product. Are you planning to hollow it out?

Jerry

What do you mean "hollow it out" ?

I will inlet as usual, do the bedding, install all hardware, and shape the exterior. Then I'll see where I am weight-wise with everything attached, and I'll remove wood accordingly.

Thanks for following this built, I appreciate

hollow it out.

I would suspect a 5lbs stock is as heavy as you can go
