If its just for close range back yard blasting just buy a lee key drive mould and a lead pot
For more accuracy if you can find them the thug slug can be bought
I grabbed a bag of thug slugs when I ordered my press that’s all they had in stock. I’m going to try them out and go from there. I was just hoping I might find a few more options out there readily available. I started down the casting hole a couple years ago but there never seems to be enough time in the day to get some real time into casting batches.
Possible sources
- Wheel weights, needs to be cleaned up.
- Discarded lead pipes (local plumbing cie or city work)
- Marina, for discarded keel
- Indoor range (backstop clean up)
I used both WW and pure lead for both LEE 1oz and Slugs R Us casts. I found the lead to group better.
The best load I came up with was with the following which I did a report on Castboolits.
Lee Load All
Remington/Peterson blue hulls
Win WAA12F114 (Yellow wad)
Fed 20S1 yellow wad (just the base)
12 gauge 1/4" felt wad
CCI 209 primers
Hogdon Titegroup powder
Lee 1oz Drive slug cast from pure lead AC
Remington 870 Wingmaster with rifled cantilever barrel
Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 scope
Velocity was hovering around 1300fps. I never chronied these loads but.
So the LEE are doable.
Good luck
I’m going to start hitting up the tire shops again and see if I can try and collect up some of the last of the lead wheel weights for I can find some. Thinking I’m going to have to make a proper back stop to stay catching my range scrap and star honing my casting skills.
I use lee 7/8oz drive key. I have 2 loadings. My skeet load slugs where i just leave the shot hopper dry and push the slug in instead of shot. Works great. My other load is with enough hs6 to shake the county. Both blow cleanly thru deer. I cast them with wheel weights and a bit of tin
Generally no. Ive shot thousands thru my 400g and 500 with cylinder barrels and my 535ats with the rifled barrel. I have shot many thru various choked sxs guns. My old russian ij58 groups them like a double rifle at 30 yards with full and fuller chokes
We used to do tactical style shoots at the farm. Shot into buckets of sand to reclaim the lead in times before fatherhood
