I have done some searching and reading but haven't really found my answer. I have been shooting my .22 and now have the itch to step up a bit. I am looking at .223's now but am on a budget. My local range is 150 yards and the next closest is 400 yards (about an hour away). So for now the max distance will be 400 yards, but I would like the capabilities to go further than that if possible.

I have mainly been looking at the savage axis combo, savage seems to have a good reputation and the price is great. Also, I might just use the scope off my .22 so I don't really need to get another scope. Anything else I should be looking at? Ideally I would like to stay under $400 but I know that probably isn't possible, EE is not out of the question either but if it is off EE I would like it to be semi local so I can check it out and skip the shipping stuff.

For that price, I would say nothing can beat the Stevens 200, especially if you reload your own ammo.

I own one in .243 and am slowly adding parts to make it more accurate and "tacticool" I have just recently started reloading and already have a group size of 0.70" at 100 yards with stock barrel on it.

Get the Marlin X7VH in 308. If you want to shoot on the cheap within 400 yards just reload with Berry's 30-30 bullets. Mine can launch 208 A-max's at 2550 FPS. Easily capable of 1000 yard shots.

Rifle is 350 dollars. Same price as Stevens or the Axis. But it has a heavy barrel, full length Rail, and accu-style trigger.

X2 on a stevens you cant beat it for the money and there are many parts available to upgrade as you progress.

I have built a few target guns on stevens and imo they are as good as anything for a building platform.

Another vote for the Stevens. I love Savage rifles but the Axis is a P.O.S.

I have heard the opposite actually, and I am a stevens owner. If I could do it again I would get the axis because its got the detachable mag instead of the pain in the rear internal box mag. Savage and stevens are practically the same so the axis would get my vote here.

Hey Frumpy.
Just a bit off the original topic, but if you join the base shooting club (open to civilians) you can shoot out to 600y. I am pretty sure its not very expensive.

Remmy or savage in .308... .223 will make you a better shooter but you will out grow it especially if you plan on hunting... Remmy 700 SPS DM or savage of the same flavor.

Lots of stores have these rifles in stock for the next couple months with all sorts of incentives like scopes and discount ammo...

I'll have to look into that, I think it's under $100 a year so that's an option for sure.

I like the price of .223 ammo a lot better and this rifle will be for target shooting. I have a Mossberg 500 with 3 barrel combo for when I get into hunting, which will hopefully be soon.

I made the same choice of 223 over 308. Much better cost per round. Had my new to me Savage VLP at the range today. What a pleasure to shoot compared to larger bore center fires?

As for hunting with your target rifle......just get a hunting rifle, or in your case go with the shotgun you plan on. Target rifles are generally heavy to do what they do well. Heavy hunting rifles are a drag. My opinion anyway. Others hunt with their target/tactical rifles and like it. Just not for me.

I was looking through one of my flyers and found the axis (no scope) for $290. I really like the price and the detachable box magazine. Should I pull the trigger on it or hold off for something a bit more expensive.

Also, can the axis be built up or is it pretty much buy and shoot (which I am fine with at $290, I can always buy another rifle :) )

I love my Savage Model 10 in .223. I found that when I wanted to now get going further out I need a new caliber so I'm converting to .260 Remington, but as a .223 it's awesome to 700 yards, after that I'm struggling some, hence going to .260

The Model 10 in .223 out of the box is excellent, lots of loads to play with to get as much accuracy as you can from the stock barrel. I'm getting 1/2 moa consistently and sometimes better. Half the cost of shooting .308 and less painful.

cost of shooting is the main reason I want to go with .223 and from the sounds of it will do everything I want. I tried to call the person in charge of the base range yesterday but couldn't get a hold of him. Even if the max distance is 600 yards a .223 should be more than enough.
