There are tons of good choices, for one...Remington SPS Varmint in 223. Accurate enough to challenge you and inexpensive enough to be relatively affordable. A heavy barrel for resisting the heat you get from shooting far more ammo than a hunting rifle.
If you like it, it will serve you well and be a good platform on which to build. If you decide it aint your thing, it will retain plenty of value to sell-off. You can get into it and a passable scope for about a grand.
I have mega-buck custom guns and I have all sorts of other toys, but I personally use a totally stock SPS varmint for whacking gophers. It a great gun and it is cheaper to buy a new rifle than it is for me to put one of my own Krieger barrels on after the factory barrel wears out.
