Starter Rig

Any suggestions for a starter rig in 308? The longest range around here is 300 yards. I'd like to stick to 308 but I've also hear some good things about 22-250.

Tell us more about what you'd like to do with it. .308 and .22-250 generally have very different uses. If you provide some more information about how much money you'd like to spend and what the rifle will be used for people will be able to give you some good suggestions.

Any Remington 700 in a synthetic stock is a good starter. Or, for half the price get an equivalent Savage.

I'm just looking to do some longer range shooting at the range. Nothing special at this time. I want to see if I'm going to like it before I spend a fortune on something.

.308 is likely ideal for you, easy to sell or build on in either a savage or preferably a Remington 700 Action. A nice heavy barrell and you're all set.

There are tons of good choices, for one...Remington SPS Varmint in 223. Accurate enough to challenge you and inexpensive enough to be relatively affordable. A heavy barrel for resisting the heat you get from shooting far more ammo than a hunting rifle.

If you like it, it will serve you well and be a good platform on which to build. If you decide it aint your thing, it will retain plenty of value to sell-off. You can get into it and a passable scope for about a grand.

I have mega-buck custom guns and I have all sorts of other toys, but I personally use a totally stock SPS varmint for whacking gophers. It a great gun and it is cheaper to buy a new rifle than it is for me to put one of my own Krieger barrels on after the factory barrel wears out.

I would stay with a .308, lots of match ammo available, or any ammo period. If you plan on reloading there is tons of proven data for the .308 . You can fire up to 15000 rds before replaceing a barrel.

Sure, but accuracy will sure be suffering. One third that would be closer to the usefull life of a .308 barrel.

Just about academic since you're not doing anythign too "out there" with it yet. I'd suggest a Stevens 200 in 308 to start. Hell, they're so affordable you could buy both the 308 and 22-250 (though I'd recommend a 223 if you want to get 2 rifles) and be under $700.
