Good afternoon Gents,

I'm new to the forum and I was looking for some ideas.

I'd like to start a Red Rifle collection and I've already picked up a Russian SKS and I am thinking about picking up a Mosin M91/30 and a SVT-40.

Eventually I'd like to get a M38 if I can, but aside from the AK (a pipe dream in Canada) I'm not sure what else I should look into picking up, which brings me to my question.

What are some suggestions for a simple Red Rifle collection aside from what I'm already got my eyes on?

-SVT-40

Thanks!

Opps, I guess I should mention that it would be NR for now.

You need many SKS, Izzy 53-54, Tula 49, and the rest... JP.

The Mosin, SVT40, M38, and M44 are all the same bullet. So it makes shooting the rifles in your collection much more practical and warrents bulk purchases for ammunition.

Collecting what you can when you can is what its about. Unfortunately rifles quickly go up in value from the Russian era guns. A German K98 is also a must to own and shoot, regardless if its a RC. Some not too bad deals on Swiss K31s has come about recently as well.

Just scored a M95/34 from Tradex for $139.00. In great shape and fast well packed shipping too. I just need a few clips for it now. A great milsurp buy!

I purchased all four of those last year and I have zero regrets. The pricing on surplus 7.62x39 and 7.62x54R is very affordable. Eventually, I would love to get an M44, but owning the M38 will be enough for now. I highly recommend getting at least one of each. Then you can start getting multiple years and different examples from the manufacturing plants producing the same rifle :D

It's funny, the deac'd AKs don't appeal to me at all, I want something that I can hold in my hands and put rounds down range with it.

Holding the deac would be interesting and I would like to at least be able to say I did that, but I would never want to own one.

I want paper punchers, not paper weights =)

VZ58 of course.

Check out the "show us your VZ58" thread - it's one of the longest threads in all the forums for a reason: because they are so easy to mod to your liking.

I went to the War musuem recently played with a deact AK for 2 minutes then thought to myself: Wow I just saved 1000$

Btw forget to mention the AG42 not sure if it considered a red rifle but its sweet

Red rifles are usually considered to be those that were manufactured in Warsaw Pact countries.

That said, your collection should include (as always IMHO):

Mosin 91/30
SKS'
SVT40
M38
M44
VZ58/CZ858

Sounds like you're on your way to a good Red Rifle collection!!

If you really want to get picky, you can look for certain years of production, certain manufacturers, model variations, the possibilities are almost endless!!!

Be warned, though. Those suckers have a sneaky way of multiplying on you when you aren't looking!!:D:D:D

I usually consider them red rifles because of the red coloured stock. Some consider them red because they were made in countries that flew the Bolshevik flag.

In that case, don't forget about the Chinese stuff. A type 56 SKS is just as good as a Russian SKS don't let people tell you other wise. A Chinese Mosin, and you might want to look into the type 81 if or when they finally get here. You could also get a Valmet but those are crazy expensive.

Yea the SKS combo deal with the hard case and t-shirt from Marstar for $199.00 is hard to beat. Anything from Tradex is usually in great condition and a good deal too.
