Starting Deer hunting

I'm going to start deer hunting this year.
What is a good combination of gun and ammo for Deer sized targets ?
I'm interested in either the .270 or .308 calibres.
What rifle should I get for an affordable price. (preferably wood stock)

shoot 165 gr boolits and go kill some deer ​
 
In those calibres there are about a gazillion choices in rifles.

What kind of hunting?? Stand/Stalk/Blind/Truck???

Are you already a shooter??

Check out fit first, it is more important than anything. Then go from there.

For example, I love Tikka's, but I find the butt stock short and uncomfortable. Some time at a good gun shop will let you know what fits you.

Even after that, you still have endless choices.
 
Savage makes an afordable rifle, they even have package deals that have a scope mounted. They are as accurate as most, and better than many. I prefer the .308 over tha .270, but suit yourself.

.270=30-06 necked down (long case)
.308=smaller case.

The .308 will have less recoil, and generally be a smaller rifle (due to the "short action".

Being as this is for deer....I would (and did!) choose the 7mm/08 (.308 necked down to 7mm) IMHO, the ultimate deer/bear cartridge, and enough "ooomph" for a moose if you should stumble across one. There are plenty of factory loadings in 7/08, many with premium bullets. The other plusses: Less recoil than the .308, and for some reason....freakishly accurate.

I think you are limiting yourself unnecessarily....what conditions do you hunt in? If the average shot at game in the East is 80yds. and the av. out west is 120yds.(from a well known publication).....Maybe a Marlin '95 in .444, 450 Marlin or 45/70 would be just the ticket, certainly more power at closer ranges!
 
When I was looking for a deer specific rifle 7-08 was top of my list but when I had cash there were none available in the gun I was buying so I went 270, but the must be at least 30 perfectly suitable and available cartridges.

Try to figure out what gun suits your hunting, fits you , your budget and taste. There are so many right anwsers out there the cartridge the gun shoots is one of the least important decisions in this process.

If your new to shooting count on getting a 22 as well same config as your main gun, Does not have to be fancy but 500 rounds of practice can be had for 13-25$ everyone should have at least 1 22 :).
 
You could hardly go wrong with either of your choices, but to me, a 270 is THE deer rifle. It would also depend on your hunting conditions, I might give the nod to the 308 if your range was shorter and in thicker brush. The 308 has more choices for factory ammo / bullet weights, but for deer, a 130 @ 3100 fps is pretty effective.
 
I use a 30-30, I was given it as a present, so I"m sticking with it. But for long shots, it's not that effective.

why not go w/ a 30-06, it's powerful enough for deer, & moose.
ammo comes in more variations than most calibres, from150 gr. upto 180 grs.

all brands come in accubond or silver tip, etcc.
but the 30-06 (as well as the 308) are offered in cheaper target loads for practise

re: gun brand, pretty much any known name brand will be fine, go and handle them & see what feels right when you bring it from a low ready position upto to your shoulder, how you like the weight, etc..

teh 30-06 in semi auto, doesn't kick much. You can't go wrong w/ the .270 either, it's a great deer calibre & flatter trajectory, for those longer shots

too many ways of looking at it. If you love guns & plan on having more, than pick one that's in your budget for now & buy more later.

My choice would be a 7-08 if you want the best low recoil deer gun. If you don't mind a little recoil get a 30-06 you would never need a different gun for any big game in North America. Savage package gun & scope is a good buy, also Stevens is low priced.
 
.270Win is far superior to .308. No question about it. .308 is fat and slow .270 has a flat trajectory. I plan to get a Tikka T3 Lite in .270WSM. .270 WSM works just fine for moose and elk too. load up a 140 grain Nosler Accubond Spitzer bullet. this bullet has a .496 BC which I have only seen in 150-grain bullets of this caliber. If you wanna shoot really flat load some 130 grains as hot as you can.:D

To say the 270Win is "far superior" than the .308Win is a bit of a stretch to say the least. :rolleyes:

At 400yds, Hornady shows only about 4" difference between the .270/130 @ 3000fps and the .308/150 @ 2800fps.

Superior, yes, but hardly "far superior".
