Hi all,
I'm fairly new to shooting sports, bought a 12 gauge last year to try trap shooting and found that I really enjoy it in spite of being terrible at it. This led to purchasing a .22 and making the mistake of buying the cheapest scope I could find, an absolute exercise in frustration. Now that the precision bug has bitten I want to put together a package that I can get some consistency with at medium range, 150-200 meters. From my research so far I'm pretty much sold on .223 for caliber and have a budget of $600-$800 for a scope. I want to buy the scope first then start saving for the rifle. My question is what kind of accuracy could I expect with an $800 scope on the .22 I have now? A Ruger 10/22 takedown. I'd also appreciate any advise on scope selection.
Thanks in advance, Andrew.

Have a good look at Sightron and Vortex but only scopes with a parallax adjustment. They are both very good scopes that represent some of the best value you will find.

I would think something aroun9 6-20 or 8-32 power will give you something you can grow into.

Make sure you get a reticle with index markings that match the scope. So if you have MOA turrets get an MOA reticle.

the answer to this is simple.............depends on the ammo you buy and shoot........some will spray and pray group and others will bug hole.....there is a difference in 1 dollar to 15 dollar a box rimfore ammo, the scope and ammo are only 2 pieces of a 3 piece equation.....

Very good idea to get the scope first so you will get something good. I'd recommend something like a sightron SIII 8-32x56. You will never be in want for more scope.

Um... No ammo will bug hole out of a 10/22 take-down. At least not at 50 yds.

I like how your approaching your goal by starting with a quality optic. You can akways out it on any orher rifles at a later date. I also second the Sightron model of scopes and Jerry at Mystic Precision can help you with right model choice. Sadly I don't mean this any disrespect to your rifle choice but the takedown model of the 10/22 is the furthest thing from a TAC driver no matter what ammo is run thru it or what optic is atop it. The limiting factor right away is the inability to swap out the weakest component of any off the shelf 10/22 and that is the barrel itself.

Unless the air is calm, it's going to be an exercise in frustration at 150 plus yards with a 22 rim fire. A good bolt action 22 is within it's realm at 50 to 100 yards.

I had bought myself a Savage MkII in .22lr a while ago and at the same time had my precision rifle sent off for a rebarell. While I waited I put my Sightron SIII 6-24x50 on the Savage and got some surprisingly good groups at 200m and had some fun at 300m (it's like 10' of drop with a .22). The glass was good enough for me to watch the bullet travel to the target and see the hole it made at 300m. I doubt your Ruger will be stellar at that distance but it should be fun.

I would say that the 6-24 power would be ideal since you can use the 6x at 50m, the 8x minimum on the 8-32x56 would be a bit much (I have both models).

And FYI I bought both scopes on the EE and both were 800$ shipped.

Good luck!

My .02 newbie cents: sell or keep yor 10/22 for plinking and get yourself a CZ 452/453/455. The 453 with the set trigger is very nice. You will be fine practicing at 200 m with a cheap Tasco 10-40x scope and it WILL shoot. You will need Burris Zee rings with +/- .020" inserts.

At my club several folks shoot piggies regularly at 200m (guided me to this setup) with this type of setup and do very well. Most shoot Martini's but one shoots a CZ 453 and my CZ 452 used to be set up like this too till I took it back to a 100m set up.

Get a nice Sightron, Vortex to dedicate to your .223 rig when you put it together. Of course it wouldn't hurt a CZ but I'm assuming you are working with a limited budget of $800 for now - Id put it in a quality .22 bolt action first and scope second.

Excellent advise guys, thanks very much. I've been wondering about the accuracy of the 10/22 takedown and now wish I'd discovered this site before the rifle instead of the other way round. Oh well, live and learn. Tikka223, why would 8x be to much at 50m?
