Starting Ipsc how many mags needed

Well most people use 5 10rd mags.

Myself i use 6, 4 on the belt 1 as a stripper and 1 in the gun.

I'd say that for a single stack 1911, 5 magazines would be a bare minimum as stages sometimes go up to 32 rounds, and maybe carry a handful of loose rounds to top off your mag after loading if you want to avoid the 'stripper' mag.

And don't forget, you might want a couple of extras, in case you screw up in one round and want to continue with the rest. Having said that, I use six, but have another five of various manufacture, origin, age, etc., just in case. :D

If you choose to settle for those 10 rounds single stacks, only buy very high quality ones, as cheaper ones have a tendency to jam alot. Most people I've seen using them were using the Wilson ones, and jams were still occuring, but less often.

keep in mind that frequently you'd do a mag change before you shoot all your rounds (for tactical reasons), so don't just divide 32 by the number of rounds in each mag.

I try to start each stage with 5 mags on the belt and 11 rounds in the gun (I have 10 round mags). I don't think you should aim for fewer mags - 5 on the belt and a full gun, as the minimum...

Some places will piggy back a short and a long course so you may need as many as 40 rounds.. I've had stages where I've needed 7 mags but then I've been known to have problems with low windows and poppers..

who puts 26 poppers in one stage?

I have 7 10 rounders for glock. I carry 6 on the belt and one as a stripper mag in the back pocket. You will be handicapped by the smaller capacity mags and you should really try to get 10 rounders. Most scenarios are set up for at least 7 rounds or more that I've seen. They're set up by guys with 10 round mags!

The max # rounds in a stage is 32. So for your 7 rd mags, you need 4.5, i.e. 5 mags to complete the longest stage.

Since you might just require extra rounds to successfully complete a stage, add in one more mag, so you start with 6 mags.

You could carry this as: 1 in gun, 4 on belt, 1 in back pocket. (or all on belt).

An extra mag in your bag is a good idea in case one of your mags malfunctions, breaks, etc.

I'm drawing a blank when you say using a mag as a stripper.

Can you explain? I really have no idea. :D

A stripper mag is a mag with only one round in it used to enter that round into the chamber before loading a full mag behind it. It's considered safer in the event that your gun goes full auto, only one round will go off, and not 10.

Or
a spare mag you use to load your pistol, then eject the stripper (spare) mag and place a full 10rd mag in,= administrative load or 11 rds.

maurice, I'm fairly certain you said the same thing Alex said. :)
Alex, if you're afraid your gun may go full auto, I would have a competent 'smith check it before you use it again.

i have 10 mags for my glock and load all of them.i carry 4 in mag carriers and 1 stripper that way when i get to the second stage i do not need to refresh mags,i just switch them out for the full 1's.saves time and allows me to help patch or anything else needed.

actually, he mentioned something about one round in a stripper mag? I load my stripper mag, cycle it, and remove that same mag, which leaves a mag with 9 rds in it, I put that back in my pocket, and grab a 10rd mag and place it in my pistol.

just use your worst mag to load up on the line, fill it before the match, you can use it all day. Just makes it easier than fishing around in your pockets looking for spare ammo.
