I just bought the lee anniversary kit and I want to reload 9mm and .40 S&W. I've read The ABC's of Reloading and Modern Reloading 2nd Edition. I was wondering what dies should I get and what kind of powder, primers, etc. should I try? Any help would be great.
 
for 9mm and .40sw, titegroup powder is winner, for primers, use winchester or cci, not federal, as lee's manual say so.

I've been looking at the same kit... You'll need shell holders for the auto-prime for each caliber that you want to reload. You may want to pick up 2 case length guages per calibre for resizing the cases. The 3-pack of carbide dies should be sufficient and includes a shell holder for the press.

As for primers, Lee recommends only CCI and Winchester primers for the auto-prime. I think primers for handgun calibres come in "small" and "large".

As for powders, check out ht tp://www.thereloadersnest.com and look up the calibre you'll be shooting. It should have load data for different powders.

Keep in mind I have yet to press a single round of ammo :D
 
If your going to get shell holder's get the Lee multi pack's that have almost all the holder's you'll need for both the press and the priming tool.

I have and have never had any reget's.

The priming tool might be something to look at also.

I think you need to look again. Most of the shell holders for the autoprime are included.
And why in the world would one possibly want 2 case length guages per calibre? One is entirely sufficent.

The reason Lee doesn't recommend Federal primers is because of a lond-standing disagreement. If you want to use Federal primers, you go right ahead.
And you are correct in the "Large" and "Small" sizes.

They don't make that clear. I've ended up going with a different kit anyway.

Extra case length guages are nice. If you were to break one, wouldn't it suck to have to wait a few weeks for a new one to be ordered?
 
Break a Lee case length gauge?!? :shock:

I can't say that it has never happened; but, I've never heard of it.
And I've used a .223 case length guage (with the cutter, to protect the threads from my hammer) as a nail set.
 
You get the auto prime shell holders in the kit.

What you don't get is the shell holders for the press. If you buy lee dies you will get the shell holders with them anyway but if you go with another die set you will have to buy them. The shell holder set is under $25.00.

If you want my advice. Buy the lee carbide dies for 9mm and 40. I also recomend titegroup for a powder as it is cheap and works good.

I've also never had a breakage issue with lee case length gauges but they're cheap so buy a couple in case you lose one.
 
titegroup is for mild/light loads you only need a little and it's cheap which is good, but if you like recoil Power Pistol is the best for 9mm and .40; it will give you 100-200fps higher velocities :)
